Bad Boys for Life (2020)
Hoped for More Laughs
Was expecting lots of mahem. (Was not disappointed there.). But I'd also expected more humor. The funniest scene was a sight gag involving two of them driving a wrecked van.
Ancillary workplace characters added interesting interactions, but felt could've done more with that too. Cute baby scene.
Knives Out (2019)
Hit with a Nary a Special Effect!
A spooky old house, an untimely death, a surprising will, & quirky, greedy family! All the elements of a great mystery. This film is full of twists & turns that deliver an entertaining adventure!
Near perfect.
The Irishman (2019)
Goombas galore...!
Brilliant in many ways, but way too long.
DeNiro never really felt Irish to me. Fascinating tale.
Gisaengchung (2019)
Upsetting premise, goes down hill from there!
Ok ok, I've got to give it to the filmmakers that this unusual film is beautiful shot & acted. But for me, it was also a disheartening mess, taking dreadful closterphobic turns as it descended into the depths.
Western Stars (2019)
Almost PERFECT!
I was not a huge fan of Bruce Springsteen, until I saw this film! Gorgeous photography, incredible setting in an old barn, fabulous songs, accompanied by beautiful strings & even an accordion! Writing, directing , & performing in this film was labor of love for Springsteen. He bridged his performances with thoughtful insights into what each song meant to him. Well chosen archival video so interesting & fun. The young cute Springsteen has become a handsome man of substance both musically & otherwise. And I loved every minute of it.
Judy (2019)
Watching a Train Wreck
Compelling performance by Zellweger captures the physicality of a woman living on sheer nerves & vices: liquor, pills, cigarettes & past fame. Heartbreaking that, as told in the credits, this is a period in Judy's life only six months before her death.
Joker (2019)
Spectacular Swamp
It's one of those huge, over wrought films chock full of great acting, sets, costumes, camera work, lighting. The whole nine yards carried by a murderous man discentigrating before our very eyes, brilliantly played by Phoenix.
Not for the faint hearted. Every second is nerve wracking.
All in the backdrop of New York City which has never looked so actively dingy. It is a world where there is no solace.
Robert DeNiro nailed his role as Johnny Carson style late night host.
Others in secondary characters carried their roles with clear, strong presences.
A must see if you are fascinated by the psychology of a human mind as it whirls & flies apart.
