Dead Space (2023 Video Game)
10/10
Twinkle, twinkle little star

I love the original game. One of the best horror game ever made and this remake makes it doubles it down.

A mining colony has found a strange obelisk on a planet never been touched by mankind before and they made the fatal mistake of bringing it onto their ship, the USG Ishimura.

The story of Dead Space takes place days after Ishimura went silent and sent a distress signal. A small team of engineers sent to check on the ship. Our protagonist, Isaac Clarke a ship systems engineer is among this small team. Our original mission gets abandoned shortly after the team sets foot on the Ishimura. The ship's crew turned into monsters. Our job is to figure out what happened on the Ishimura, find our get girlfriend, Nicole who is stationed on the Ishimura and get off the ship but things get complicated very fast.

One of game's strength is atmosphere. It's the fear of the unknown. We don't know what happened, and what's in the dark. The lighting is insanely well made. The background noises of the necromorps' screams, the sound of them crawling in the vents and with the hallucinations the marker causes makes the Ishimura feel alive. Dead yet alive. Empty yet lived in. Isaac is never alone. It feels like someone or more like something is always around. This helps the game's get it's iconic eerie feeling.

Isaac has a voice now. In the OG game, Isaac is silent. But with the remake he has a personality. He engages in dialogue with the other team members and with major story characters. Some breath of fresh air and a well needed quality of life upgrade.

Isaac isn't a soldier. He isn't trained in any way. On top of his little to zero combat experience the mutated creatures made by the marker can't be killed with regular bullets but he's surgical precision with mining tools and heavy duty equipment helps him survive the horrors he's forced to face on the Ishimura. "Cut their limbs off" as the iconic quote says. The game mainly uses these repurposed tools with only 1 actual firearm in our arsenal.

With the upgraded graphics the disgusting otherworldly gore never looked this good before. The sound design is excellent. The weapons we wield & the disgusting sound of dismemberment is all there. Stomping on a dead body for some ammo for our plasma cutter never looked or sounded this good before. Simply put the game looks and sound is top of the line.

Gameplay is simple yet engaging. As the story goes new sections of the ship unlock and it makes you want to backtrack for some loot or to engage in the few side quests we have.

If you a fan of horror, sci fi, or video games this is a must play. This is simply a well made, high quality remake that respects the original game. Motive deserves respect for staying true to the original and only changing what needed to be changed. Now we wait for the remake of the sequel so we can be whole again.
