Deathtrap (1982)
see a live performance
Very uneven with mediocre performances by Reeves, miscasting of Dyan Cannon, and even Caine, although good, couldn't carry this feeble performance.
(Spoilers) Inexplicably, they change the two genuinely scary parts of the movie: the reappearance of "Clifford" both from the first "attempt" and the second attempt at murder. In the first, he's supposed to break through the french doors, and the second, he appears out of the dark when, illuminated by a bolt of lightning, he is suddenly seen above Sidney's head swinging a pike or axe for one final attempt to kill Sidney with his dying breath. Both of these sudden appearances are genuinely startling--in the play, but not in the movie. The very end, too, is inextricably squandered.
Don't waste your time or money. Unfortunately, no other version exists. Wait until a performance comes to your town. We just saw one by a volunteer amateur company in a small gin-rickety playhouse, which was far better than this.
Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2010)
I wonder what National Geographic would do in that cave....
...in 2009 a limestone cave in southern France was discovered by three speleologists, who discovered spectacular rock art over twice as old as those of Lascaux. I am sorry that Herzog apparently had exclusive rights to photograph this spectacular cave. Because of the delicacy of the environment, and the fact that the French minister in charge of the caves loved Herzog's work, he was granted exclusive access to the caves.
Unfortunately, his documentary is marred by intrusive music,"arty" interpretations, hand-held cameras (perhaps unavoidable), 3-D, and a dearth of scientific information. The dialog of non-native speakers was often hard to understand. Herzog did the impossible. He created a tiresome documentary about spectacular art.
Wedding Crashers (2005)
unfunny, overlong
Maybe I'm just too old.
Maybe, being female, I don't find movies about cruising weddings for one night stands funny. I also don't find outrageous parodies of gay-artist-maniacs funny. The first 10-15 minutes are promising, but after that this 'film' gradually falls apart. Very uneven concepts with the heaving-breathing other maniac (Claire's finance) and her sister, the nympho-turned virtuous bride-to-be. Lots of bloopers and unexplained plot twists, like Vaughn miraculously escaping his bonds after being pinned down all night long (where did Gloria learn those naval knots?), and the finance's friend who managed to track down our heroes' wedding crashing mania despite their aliases and no background info. And when Claire is rescued during the wedding interruptus, why is everyone---priest, her finance, parents, guests, etc.--miraculously silent while Our Couple work out their problems? Oh well, I didn't like Meet The Parents either, a movie from which this film borrowed a great deal.
Oppenheimer (1980)
BBC 1980 Oppenheimer coming on DVD!
I posted on IMDb on this series recently, giving a snail mail address at the commercial arm of the BBD where one would write to appeal release. I wrote to that address, mentioning Sam Waterson and his popularity prominently. I just received the following reply:

Dear Kate,
I work for the BBFC, the British equivalent to the MPAA, and we classify DVDs and videos as well as films in this country. Anyway, I am currently in the process of giving a certificate to the 1980 miniseries 'Oppenheimer.' While researching the work on the IMDb, I noticed your post and thought you might like to know that the work is about to be released (hence the need for a certificate).
I don't know which company is distributing it, but keep your eyes peeled!
Kind regards,
Emily +++++++++++++++++
hooray!
I also want to contact Netflix re purchasing this.

kk2840@earthlink.net I emailed the BBC recently regarding whether their terrific series Oppenheimer had ever been released on video or DVD. I have not been able to find it. I received the following reply. If you do write the BBC, be sure to mention that Sam Waterston is very popular in the US. You can also enter "Oppenheimer (1980)" on amazon.com, and find a box to check to request release by the owner (BBC) and be notified when it's released.

Here's the reply from the BBC:
Dear Kate
Thank you for your e-mail regarding 'Oppenheimer'.
I was interested to read that you would like a copy of this programme which you have enjoyed. I have checked the BBC Shop and on-line retailers and can find no record of it being available. We are unaware of plans at present to release this programme on DVD. However, if you would like to make a suggestion, can I suggest you put it in writing to the commercial arm of the BBC:
Commissioning Editor BBC Worldwide Ltd Woodlands 80 Wood Lane London W12 0TT
May I thank you again for taking the time to contact the BBC.
Regards

{Comments:} i am trying to find a copy of the terrific BBC production "Oppenheimer', a six part series made in 1980 with Sam Waterston from a book/script by Peter Prince. I watched parts of it then on PBS American Playhouse, but can't find it on video anywhere.
