Freaks and Geeks (1999)
Good...Not Great...
I saw this show because of the praise it received on this site. The way people talk about it,you would think it was the second coming. Some people also related it to "My So-Called Life" and I liked "SO-Called" MUCH better.Besides a select few,the characters were annoying and even those better characters had their moments. But,by far,Bill Haverchuck was the king in the bad characters patriarch. He was supposedly the funny one and had great lines, but I couldn't wait for him to make an exit.He may be funny looking, but not funny.Moving on,there were things I did like in the show.Like the hypocritical freaks who were supposedly trying to rebel, but cared so much what the other freaks thought about what they do/say/think,and how the geeks took a greater chance in love and life. The demonstration of that polarity was interesting.I like how the actors were truly the age intended. But my enjoyment ended there.I hated Lindsey and Sam's parents and how the dad always said how someone died by doing a certain thing.I loathed how Lindsey lost her faith because her grandma was fearful of dying. That was just downright stupid and aggravating that a young woman in the beginning of truly living has lost a basis for a moral foundation because of a family member leaving her and in her last moments didn't try to reassure her granddaughter that passing on is another part of life. You may think I'm a Christian freak, but I believe that any faith is what we all need.I admit,I was intrigued to watch the whole series and some moments are quite funny, but for the small ratio who don't find overly emotional people funny, avoid it.
Unfabulous (2004)
"Unfabulous" lives up to it's title
Where to start with this show...All the scripts that were denied from all the crappy sitcoms were sent to the "Unfabulous" set and filmed and packed for the American airwaves. It's an overall disappointing look into the next generation's ideas, relationships, and society so unbelievably sugar sweet,it's diabetic.Emma Roberts plays Addie,a thirteen year old who plays her guitar and writes songs about the current situation she's in.The songs suck, and forgive me if I had too high of an expectation for halfway decent lyrics from a thirteen year old, that's my fault.None of this show comes close to reality.Tell me,between an average of homework taking 2 to 3 hours, including chores, hygienic needs as well as eating, and going to school, she can find time to write, compose, and play a song or two?The acting is best compared to a third-grade play and a last minute replacement was forced to learn the lines within a short period. The show is one-dimensional and so are the characters. And I find it disturbing that when the characters are in a relationship, they act like an old, married couple. The female is dominate and the male assumes no authority. So if you want to kill a half an hour, watch the future of America and get really worried when you realize these are the people who will control everything when we're senior citizens.(Hamburglar Milkshake!!!)
Flight of the Phoenix (2004)
Plight of this bad movie
Wow!Where to begin with this poor excuse of a movie? The Dennis Quaid character is a jerk, and has no sight of the real issues at hand.Several people who were just discharged from their jobs at an oil drilling site are flying home. Before take-off,it is made abundantly clear that their weight capacity is met when they allow the eccentric Elliot(Giovanni Ribisi)on-board.Elliot supposedly overloads weight capacity of this twenty year old plane that looks already damaged, and while the plane is crossing the Gobi desert, they hit a rock formation, and unable to recover,go down. This movie is a human story,so for the action buffs, there's few exciting moments, and for sympathizers, there's no character to feel sorry for.Everyone is so egotistical and the clashing of egos when near death is upon them, was absurd.Quaid was the most annoying because he basically takes credit for the saving of the people, and when blame is issued,he virtually receives none for his wrong doing. The smartest character is Elliot, and when the smartest character is the most hated by the very people he's trying to save,no one can save this dismal film.I suggest that those who see this film be ready not to take it so seriously, and enjoy my personal favorite scene when they show the body of the guy who wanders out during a sand storm.Apparently in the desert, you compose to near skeleton after about an hour or two after death.Good for laughs that aren't supposed to be there, but bad for a meaningful story.
According to Spencer (2001)
Melodrama disguised as comedy
This movie was sub-par at all attempts at comedy, romance, and wit. Most of the movie is spent emphasizing the wounds we all suffer after a relationship is broken or lost. The leading woman was SO boring, she could hardly hold my attention or interest and she just came off as annoying. The best part of the film was Spencer's room-mates.They made me laugh a little, hardly enough to recommend this movie to my friends. The truth is,if this movie made more of an attempt to be a romance or comedy, not both, the characters would be more defined and we could see their point of view and understand why they have certain tendencies towards relationships. So if you want to kill an hour and thirty four minutes, but don't want to get caught up in a movie's plot, see "According To Spencer".
P.S. if your seeing this movie for Giovanni Ribisi, don't turn your head or you'll miss his MINUTE AND A HALF cameo!!
