The White Lotus (2021)
Season 1 + Season 2 = Mike White is a Genius
Both seasons take a few episodes to really get going. But I can't believe how good they both are, with such good storytelling, even though the stories are so different. And the acting, directing, scenery - all fantastic. Even the clothes are entertaining. One of my favorite aspects is how the story is so good and the acting is so good, so even when a scene is deliberately a little over the top/farcical, people's behavior just rings so true.
I don't know how they get all the pieces to come together so well, but the result is something that's fun to watch, but also makes you think a lot about the characters and judge their behavior and motivations. And nothing and no one is pure and simple.
Once could have been a fluke, but twice? Now I want a third season.
Professor T (2021)
Not familiar with the original but I don't like the remake
The first episode spent a lot of time laying the groundwork/backstory, so we cut it some slack. But both the first and second episodes aren't really crime shows - they pretty much just tell a story linearly that leads you to the culprit. (And both shows use the same logic of "90 percent of murderers are right handed, so to save time in the investigation, let's ignore all the left-handed people and not talk to them.)
We didn't find the quirky things funny or interesting at all, and they got more intrusive/longer/more boring in the second episode.
Momentum Generation (2018)
It kind of has it all
Interesting story about a group of surfers, that delivers good footage of surfing, but also evolves into a documentary about life
The Deed (2017)
Great Show - Easier to Learn from Others' Mistakes
Very enjoyable show. I like both hosts (Sidney and Sean). They both have a good style in dealing with people who don't see the mistakes they are making.
It's interesting to see how different people react to good advice - some people are so receptive, and others resist, and seem to think they know best, even though it's usually their own mistakes that have gotten them in trouble in the first place. I think both hosts give people a little more rope than they would normally, both to help and so that there's a show.
