The most overrated anime of all time
5 April 2020
I'd heard about this show for ages. Almost every anime fan around claims that it's the absolute best anime can offer. Also, as a fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender, I'd heard many saying the two were of similarly high quality. So without further hesitation, I decided to give it a shot.

After finishing it, all I can say is that I was left immensely unsatisfied and painfully disappointed. Even around the halfway mark I considered dropping it but I decided to prevail, yet my thoughts were unchanged by the end.

First off, it's characters just come across as cardboard cutouts of the typical shounen tropes. Just goofy, over the top and annoyingly ecstatic. I couldn't have cared less about the two brothers and there struggle. Other characters that are meant to be sympathetic or whose deaths are meant to be impactful are hardly spent enough time with to have any effect on the viewer. Also there are just way too many characters, and unnecessary ones at that. You just feel overwhelmed at times by how many different characters are doing different things that you end up not really caring about them or the story.

The show's tone is arguably it's biggest downfall, in my opinion. It can just never seem to establish a consistent mood. Every tragic moment, every depressing moment, every epic moment, or should I say whenever moments like these are attempted, they're ALWAYS interrupted by some form of comic relief, a silly joke or a character making a chibi face. It's like the show goes out of its way to undercut every moment of tension. It's honestly really childish and the show loses momentum because of it.

Onto the villains. They're just MEH. Dumb and incompetent when the plot needs them to be, unthreatening and lacking any depth whatsoever. Sometimes they'll go out of their way to let the heroes win, even after supposedly beating them. They're just so impersonal, and even when this is attempted, it just seems rushed and completely out of nowhere. The Big Bad is your typical over-the-top shounen villain, so no surprises or nuance there either.

As for the animation, it seems too much like a western cartoon, and it's quality can sometimes be really inconsistent. The soundtrack is neither good nor bad, just fine. None of it will stick with me. It often felt as if four or five tracks were on an endless loop to the point of annoyance.

Overall Brotherhood is not a horrible show, it's just painfully mediocre. If you're looking for a better alternative, watch the 2003 Fullmetal Alchemist, the one that every fan of Brotherhood will tell you to ignore because "it's not like the manga." but honestly what does it matter? I unfortunately listened to these people and watched Brotherhood first and then watched 2003's. Pretty much every flaw in Brotherhood was already rectified in that version. The characters are more sympathetic, there are less unnecessary supporting characters, the tone is darker and far more consistent, the humor is less ecstatic and appropriately placed and the villains are far more complex, and feel like characters rather than mindless obstacles for the heroes.

Your Name. (2016)
4/10
Overrated AF
27 August 2018
When I first saw Your Name, I enjoyed it for the most part. I thought the pop music montages and dialogue were pretty cringey, but overall the film was visually and atmospherically impressive enough for me to fall for it.

After a recent rewatch, I was actually shocked at how emotionally manipulative and utterly devoid of substance this movie really is. I'll break everything down for this:

The body swapping is a fairly generic idea, but they could have done a lot with it. Unfortunately it fails on so many levels to further cement the idea of the two protagonists exploring each other's lives and personalities, and instead the movie tricks the viewer into thinking that this actually happens. The two leads never learn about each other's lives from swapping bodies on any emotional level, instead those cringey montages that I mentioned before gloss over this important aspect that should have been more properly handled. This is also extremely problematic since we're supposed to believe that Taki and Mitsuha actually fall in love with each other, but we never find out why. They don't learn anything from living as the opposite gender either, in fact the story relies on breakage of character for comical effect. For example, the normally androgynously behaved and chilled-out Taki acts like a sporty, aggressive, manly-man while in Mitsuha's body.

SPOILERS: The second half of the movie is just as disastrous as the disaster it depicted. Not only does it abruptly drop the comedic tone of the first half of the movie, but it handles disaster and loss rather badly too. It relies far too heavily on the protagonists making dumb decisions, wasting time complaining about nothing, retardedly running around for no reason, and idiotically forgetting each other's names. All this is made even more unbearable by yet another wave of godawful pop music montages and cringey dialogue.

In the end there's no emotional loss in Your Name. There's no sacrifice, no learning from your mistakes, because in the end the protagonists just reverse the timeline and save the day. But now they've forgotten about each other forever? Surely there's a bittersweet ending? Nope, they get reunited and live happily ever after in the end, that's what happens. That time wasting ordeal of running around and forgetting each other's names meant nothing in the end.

Even though there are also many MANY plot holes that I didn't mention, Your Name's number one issue boils down to the atrocious writing and badly thought out story and characters. I still adore the film's visuals and immersive atmosphere, but it simply falls flat as a story.

The Legend of Korra (2012–2014)
4/10
Barely a sequel
30 June 2018
The reason why Avatar: The Last Airbender was so great was because it took a fairly simple good vs evil conflict, and as the story progressed, it became more nuanced and morally gray by exploring the ambitions of the heroes and villains.

The exact opposite holds true for The Legend Of Korra, where every season starts off with the potential for a complex and nuanced story, yet almost always turns into a contrived, black & white, good vs evil conflict, and every seemingly sympathetic villain turns out to be a generic Big Bad that just used the Philosophy of the Day to hide their true intentions, with Season 2 being clearest example of this.

The characters are all bland, with the possible exclusion of Korra's teacher, Tenzin. Team Avatar itself feels extremely disconnected and its members treat eachother less like best friends and more like awkward coworkers. The humor is cringey, the romance is horrific and the writing feels like Fan Fiction at times, with some ridiculous new additions to the Avatar Universe (Pokémon Spirits, Giant Demon Kites, Laser Titans and Giant Robots FFS)

Overall, The Legend Of Korra is superficially entertaining, and what it has in visual appeal, it lacks in depth and emotion. It focuses more on trying to be edgier and darker than Avatar that it completely loses focus on crafting a good story and compelling characters, thus the supposedly "mature themes" fail to leave any impact.

Pleasantly surprised
1 May 2018
For so long I'd been hearing so much about this show but never felt the urge to watch it since I've never been a fan of a medieval setting and I'd started to grow tired of over the top gore and sex, but still I wanted to find out what I was missing since so many people seemed to like it.

All I can say is that I'm pleasantly surprised. I've just finished Season 7 and while I was watching I couldn't stop. It quite literally sucks you in. Yes there is A LOT of gore and sex but there are many genuinely heartwarming moments too. It does drag on a bit at certain points and there are several subplots that pretend to be important to the story that I actually ended up skipping, but for the most part the story is brilliant and complex and filled with both genuinely good and wonderfully despicable characters. The cinematography is also georgeous and the world is stunning and diverse. I'm looking forward to the final season.

Overall I'd say that it is really worth a watch. Don't be put off by the fact that it's got blood and boobs and just watch it! You won't regret it!

I don't understand all the praise
30 April 2018
I'm not a huge fan of the superhero genre, but I'm able to appreciate these movies and have a good time when I watch them, however I can't say the same for Infinity War.

Overall it was just a huge mess. A basic cliché formula which consisted entirely of several over-the-top action sequences with snarky one-liners from the "characters" every now and then. The plot barely made any sense, in fact most of the time I barely knew what was going on and the villain's motives were unoriginal and cliché

There was apparently supposed to be a lot of emotional weight to this film but it just wasn't there for me. The balance between all the humor and high stakes was just completely off so I didn't know which scenes to take seriously or not.

I think the weirdest part of this movie for me was that the Avengers felt oddly out of place for most of it. The Guardians Of The Galaxy are featured far more prominently so the rest of the characters just feel like random background soldiers who show up every few minutes to kick some ass.

Bad as a movie, not bad for a Twilight movie
11 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Breaking Dawn Part 2 continues the Twilight Saga tradition of taking itself too seriously without a hint of self-awareness. It's bad. It's really bad, but like the other movies, that's what makes it hilarious, and the only reason I bother watching these terrible movies is for the LOLs.

Bella still looks like she's constantly on the verge of vomiting, although she is slightly more lively than she previously was, Edward is still boring, Jacob is still pathetic and the rest of the cast is as lifeless as the vampires they're playing.

The plot is, as usual, dumb and filled with gaping holes (they build a house for Bella, Edward and their child, but then the next day they plan on leaving Forks. WTF?)

The special effects are awful awful awful, especially that damn baby. The vampire running sequences are embarrassing (seriously why couldn't all the chase scenes be more like the one with Victoria in New Moon, That was awesome and it didn't need all these terrible effects and green screens)

After so much boring, the one thing that made all of the boredom worth it was the final fight sequence. It really was spectacular. The devastated gasps from the audience when Carlisle's decapitated head was revealed and the cheering when Jane was finally killed said it all. And the twist was even more amazing.

The ending sequence was actually rather touching, despite me not caring for any of the main characters.

Overall it's as bad as any of the other twilight movies, but it manages to be one of the better ones.

It's bad, but not as bad as people make it out
11 February 2018
Okay this movie is bad. The whole franchise is bad. The only good thing about the Twilight Saga is the music and the unintentional laughs, in fact the only reason I watch these movies is because they're hilariously stupid. New Moon is commonly made out to be the worst of the franchise (alongside Breaking Dawn Part 1) but I actually found it to be better than most of the others.

For starters, it's got a dope soundtrack, probably the best in the franchise. The action sequences were also the best in the series too, especially the chase sequence featuring Victoria (I don't know why the rest of the movies couldn't make the vampire chase scenes as good as this one, instead of the awful green screen and CGI ones that they normally use) Speaking of CGI, the wolves were actually really well made, and were more realistic than the ones from the rest of the franchise. I was impressed overall by the general aesthetics of the film.

Don't get me wrong, this movie is still terrible. Kristen Stewart still has that constant sickly face and voice that sounds like it's on the verge of vomiting, Robert Pattinson is as boring as ever and Taylor Lautner is pathetic. The romance and chemistry between the main characters is almost non-existent, and the dialogue is some of the most cringeworthy and embarrassing I've ever heard. This movie is really slow too, and so much time is frustratingly wasted on put-on conversations between the "characters" and swooping helicopter shots of the woods.

Overall The Twilight Saga is bad, and New Moon is no exception, but I personally think it's one of the better instalments in the franchise.

So bad that it's good
11 February 2018
Okay let's get this out of the way, this movie is terrible. From Kristen Stewart constantly looking like she's about to vomit and Robert Pattinson's cringey mannerisms and one-liners, to the embarrassing romance, action sequences and special effects, this movie is just so so bad... but that's actually the only reason I even watched the franchise.

It's hilarious how ridiculous and un-self-aware The Twilight Saga actually is. I can't help but wonder how both the people responsible and the Twi-Hards could actually take it seriously, and that's why I love it.

But I must admit, I just love the atmosphere of this movie, and the awesome soundtrack helps as well. Certain actors do a serviceable job and overall this one is probably the best movie in the saga.

They are all terrible, but this one is the worst for me
11 February 2018
Let's be honest, The Twilight Saga is bad! The plot, the acting and the romance. The only good things that can be said about the franchise are the music, certain action sequences and they're all just so stupid that they're actually amusing, in fact the only reason I watched these movies was for the LOLs.

Eclipse is the only exception, and by that I mean it's just as bad as the others, except it's missing the great soundtrack, has terrible action sequences babtized with embarrassing CGI, and the dialogue and plot are so boring, monotonous and forgettable that you'll fall asleep halfway through. It can't even get the title of "so bad that it's good" You can literally go straight from New Moon and skip to Breaking Dawn Part 1 and the story will still make perfect sense.

Get Out (I) (2017)
8/10
A very risky yet clever film
11 February 2018
This is probably my favorite movie of 2017, and probably one of the best psychological films out there. The dialogue and events that occur are all so relatable and engaging, and it's all highlighted my some of the best acting I've ever seen in a film. I cannot properly express how impressed I am by the entire cast, and the psychological aspects were incredible!

The plot was very well written, however there were a few moments that confused me and there are a few glaring plot holes, and certain jump scares were rather cheap and could have easily been made more subtly. I personally found the ending to be quite anti-climactic and empty too, but nonetheless, I think Get Out certainly delivered the message it tried to send.

Underwhelming after all the hype it got
10 February 2018
There was so much hype for this movie, so my expectations were set extremely high.

While watching It, I was getting so bored as cheap jump scares kept on piling up one after the other! No attempt was made to try and make this film more cleverly constructed. It was just cliché after cliché! There were a few genuinely scary moments, but they still felt underwhelming.

As for the acting, Alexander Skårsgard did a phenomenal job playing Pennywise, and the younger cast was heartwarming too. Overall, It is an acceptable horror movie, but not a very memorable one.

It's different, but that's not saying a lot
10 February 2018
I watched the original Blade Runner and it gave me a migrane. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't enjoyable and I definitely would not watch it again. The same can be said for this movie, but I honestly ended up quite enjoying this one. It's basically more of the same... literally, it's like 10 hours long, but it manages to actually be mostly enjoyable and not just a statement to prove how clever the directors are, even though it does feel like it at certain points.

The story is...meh. It doesn't really feel like a sequel to Blade Runner and I can't really tell whether that's a good or a bad thing. It's also really really unessecarily long!!

The acting is nothing special. Ryan Gosling is basically the same character from Drive, Harrison Ford was in it just to sell tickets, Ana de Armes is cute and I can't really say much about Jared Leto. The one exceptional actor was Sylvia Hoeks as the villainous Luv, who is always a scene-stealer.

Oh and did I mention how long this movie is? It's actually really frustrating how much time is wasted showing a character staring at something or walking long distances or pausing between sentences.

The one thing that deserves most of the praise this movie is getting is its cinematography. Everything is just georgeous. The world design and the action sequences were masterfully made.

Overall this movie is basically what I expected from an unnecessary Blade Runner sequel.

One of the most entertaining movies I've ever seen
10 February 2018
Kingsman: The Secret Service is an action packed and hilariously entertaining film that everyone should see. It follows the classic spy movie formula but still manages to be original with self-awareness and subverting clichés. It's extremely gory at times, but it portrays the violence with good taste.

The performances from the main actors are impressive. Taron Egerton as the likable protagonist, Eggsy, is perfect, especially for a newcomer, Colin Firth brings his usual charm to his performance and Samuel L. Jackson plays the extremely entertaining and hilarious villain, Valentine, accompanied by his badass henchwoman Gazelle, portrayed by Sofia Boutella, who has prosthetic blades instead of legs which she uses in her epic fight scenes.

Overall I was pleasantly surprised by this movie, and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves the clasic spy genre

I don't think I can even call this a movie
10 February 2018
This is barely a story. The entire thing is just an endless repeat of the main "characters" robbing celebrities' houses and partying at the club afterwards, in fact it's as if one scene just got stuck and repeated over and over again until it created a black hole of bad dialogue, flashing lights, pulsing music and annoying teenage girls. It's all simply nauseating!

The few nice things that can be said about this "film", such as the great cinematography and the talented main actors who try their hardest to say the terrible lines they're given, aren't enough to save it.

It's 2018 and I still watch this show
10 February 2018
I grew up with this show and I can't imagine my life without it. It truly is not only the best cartoon series, but also one of the best series out there. With an incredible story, beautiful animation, amazing characters, great villains and awesome action sequences, it's simply flawless in every way possible.

Season 1 starts off slowly but only because of the terrific character introductions and world building, introducing the lovable team of protagonists, Aang, Katara and Sokka, being chased by the angsty Prince Zuko, accompanied by his adorable and wise uncle.

Season 2 is probably the best of the three, and introduces an awesome new character, Toph, and a perfect new villain, Azula. The animation also improves and is packed with action, emotion and epicness.

The Final Season is also magnificent and the characters are at their best at this point, and so is the animation quality.

Overall this show is a must! I've shown it to several kids and adults alike and they always end up getting hooked.
