Black Lightning (2018)
The racists crawling out of the woodwork for this one
And honestly, ignore the hissy fits they keep posting here, as if whining online, over and over, can make it any less pathetic. Black Lightning is not just about race, is the thing. A lot of the reviews on here make it seem like that because, and I repeat, the racists are showing up for this one. It's about family, and coming of age, and aging, and the gridlock of being powerful but conscious of that power's repercussions. Filmed beautifully, it's visually captivating and so easy to get in to that before you know it, you're knee deep in giving a crap about the characters. So far, Black Lightning is a good show. It's entertaining, it's engaging, and it's attempting to tackle a highly charged subject that needs to be tackled as often and as frankly as possible. It doesn't do so perfectly, no, but it's still brand new. I'm excited to see where it goes from here.
The Flash (2014)
Why the heck is this popular
The team behind The Flash, aka The Barry "White-Bread" Allen Show couldn't write an engaging character or storyline even if they were getting paid millions to do so. Oh wait. Spare the braincells and give this a big fat miss.
Legends of Tomorrow (2016)
S'Good
By far and away the best offering from DC. True, the first season is unflinchingly stupid, but it takes a steep turn uphill in season 2 and continues steadily on up from there. The characters are easy to care about, and in some cases, they're downright lovable. Now a little over halfway through season 3, the team is hitting its stride- they're cohesive, natural, and seem like they're genuinely friends. Always nice to see that.
Stories about misfits, outlaws, and/or working class folks are few and far between these days, which makes this show that much sweeter. Mick Rory, (one of the best characters on tv fight me), is an out and out criminal, bruiser, and refers to cops as pigs, and yet he isn't portrayed as a villain, at least not usually. With all the copaganda on TV these days, it's a breath of fresh air to watch a bunch of outcasts hurtling through space and time, making mistakes, breaking the law, going against the establishment, but always doing their human best.
This show has a lot of follow through for a light-hearted comic book ensemble. Have I talked about how the women are written? They're written as if they're all actual people. And all different people at that. It's amazing. Unlike Supergirl, which talks big, and yet only tells the stories of rich, pretty, white women who are somehow the best at everything they do without ever having to work for it. With Legends, this isn't the case. The women are allowed to struggle, and make mistakes, and do stupid stuff, and become better for it through hard work. Just like women in real life. The men are written well too, but that's not as rare. I will say the range of male characters is also refreshing. It's not just: The Rich Misunderstood One, The One With The Dark Secret, The Funny But Not Great With Women One, The Bland Protagonist One.
It's not perfect but it is great, and great fun to watch. There are some laugh out loud moments, and after watching an episode I'm always in a better mood.
