Dog Years (2017)
A Haunting Reminiscence
A loving reminder that all that is beautiful, strong, or meaningful fades with time. Even an icon. Arguably, Reynolds was the most desirable man in the world. He essentially plays himself via his character Vic Edwards. We are forced to come literally face to face with the ravages of time, the consequences of bad decisions, and the stark contrast between how later in life there is plenty of time to ruminate about ones regrets. Through the eyes of his youthful admirers and trip down memory lane, Edwards rediscovers some things long forgotten and ties up loose ends. The movie was both haunting and humorous. It is obvious that the script was written for only one man. The inimitable charmer, Burt Reynolds. I laughed. I cried. I grieved. And then I rejoiced.
The Shape of Water (2017)
Oscar Winner?? Why?
It's such an odd premise. The sets are interesting and the sentiment is sweet, but I just couldn't get past the premise to the point where I could suspend disbelief.
Detroit (2017)
Detroiter Here
I was hoping for more. The movie was long, but I felt like the emphasis was on the wrong things. Motive was glossed over. Torture scenes were drawn out. Why were the cops so evil and the detectives "enlightened"? Having lived through those times and knowing public servants from that era, I think they way things were portrayed was not true to form. The acting was strong and the content was emotional, but here in Detroit this case is still hotly debated and I am not sure the filmmaker captured how it is seen here.
Victoria & Abdul (2017)
Mixed feelings
I feel this tried to be both a love story and a historical epic. It fell short trying to serve two masters. The costuming and sets were lovely. Dench is always strong and didn't disappoint. But it rather felt a bit like a made for TV film
Darkest Hour (2017)
Astonishing Performance
Oldman is Churchill. Having recently visited the bunker featured in the movie and reading up on Churchill, I found the performance brilliant. The casting was inspired. The direction superb. I loved the shots and angles that made a rather complex narrative spring to life.
Black Panther (2018)
Disappointing
I will preface this by saying, I am not a Marvel fan, nor is this my genre. Due to all the hype and positive press, I went to see the movie. While the acting and sets were superb, I found the plot itself was a let down. From a sociological perspective, I felt it promoted vigilante justice, might makes right, and "stick with your own kind" thinking. These are tired cliches. Further, it doesn't elevate Black Americans to play into the old plot lines, especially when the violence is brother vs brother. The climax literally has a main character self destruct rather than live in bondage. The message made me very uncomfortable.
