Licorice Pizza (2021)
Fumbled and unlikely
I only reserve comments on here for movies that either blew me away or utterly disappointed me.
I love Anderson, I think he's a fantastic director and storyteller but he really missed the mark with this.
The majority of the production was on point, but it's the minority that really drags this film down. The events that happen are massively unlikely even for a fictional story and the theme we get with this film.
It would have been far better off had it been a sequence of events spread over the course of one night than the time period laid out here, and it's just simply ridiculous how Anderson has tried to convince us that what happens (I'm trying to remain spoiler free) would and could occur, while leading us to a conclusion that could easily have been done on a more grounded level.
Love Anderson - didn't love this!
Wyvern Hill (2021)
Outstanding achievement
Wyvern Hill (aka Hollow) is an incredible feat of filmmaking and teaches us what can truly be achieved on such a minimal budget.
I've watched the directors earlier works/short films and can see he was leading us up to something brilliant.
Those who only enjoy gallons of CGI and regurgitated "typical" story lines that save you from having to think about what you're watching need not apply.
This is a film made from pure passion and effort, and as a low-budget filmmaker myself I can say how incredibly difficult this must have been to pull off. But they did it. And they did it with all the psychological horror-loving style they could muster.
It was a great turn out from the actors and all the crew involved and raises the bar for any ambitious filmmaker attempting to "do a feature" on a shoe string. For the majority, you just can't. You may think you can. But you can't. The camerawork, the acting, the colour grade, the audio, the story (the story!!!) - all of these elements must be on form and work together in harmony. And Jonathan and his team have managed it and sit among the few who have.
Give this watch. Sit back, don't be distracted, and learn how it's done.
Day of the Dead: Bloodline (2017)
Oh dear....
Romero's Day Of The Dead is arguably the best of his original trilogy. They tried to remake this masterpiece with the help of Mena Suvari, Ving Rhames and co, and it worked out terribly. You'd think another attempt would draw on the failures of that turkey. But Bloodline manages to enhance the failings even further to produce this absolute dud of a movie. The acting is incredibly wooden, and that's usually something I can get past but if it weren't for utterly poor story.
I'd watch it if you are a pure zombie genre fan and need to tick it off your list but I'd sooner rewatch Miss Suvari shooting at zombies that can walk on ceilings!!
Fight Club (1999)
One of the greats
An unlikely yet perfect cast. David Fincher excels with Fight Club. It's one of those movies that come around very rarely that take you aback for it's originality and credit to the brains behind the original novel.
Everything about this movie feels like it was done with the utter care and attention of everyone involved. From the actors, director, FX guys to the colourists. It is simply a gritty, grimy, beautiful adaptation.
