The Last of Us: Left Behind (2023)
Superb and necessary character development
I'm sure many reviewers will look negatively on this episode, viewing it as a filler and an unwanted break from the constant action we have become accustomed to.
However, we knew little of Ellie's backstory, having only been informed of the loss of everybody she had ever cared for. Given her immunity, the acquisition of her scar warranted explanation, and the inevitability of this unfolding during the episode provided the greatest sense of tension and anticipation I have personally experienced thus far.
The juxtaposition of the innocence of youth; the simplest childhood experiences Ellie has been deprived of, alongside the impending tragedy foreshadowed from the outset render this hour amongst the bleakest yet most captivating of the Last of Us.
A heart wrenchingly beautiful prelude and context for the inevitable action to come, roll on next week.
Only Murders in the Building: I Know Who Did It (2022)
Perfectly Imperfect
Those who view this series through the lens of an Agatha Christie novel will always be disappointed, but they are missing the point entirely. Are there plot holes? Without doubt. One could spend hours criticising the implausible revelations and cliffhangers which provide the ending to almost each episode and the link into the next.
However, when viewed as the shamelessly flamboyant comedic murder mystery this show is, you'll struggle to find a more enjoyable series. The interactions and chemistry between the three protagonists is truly heartwarming.
So remove your critic's glasses, pour yourself a large glass of wine and revel in the imperfection.
The Man in the High Castle: The New Colossus (2018)
Best of the season so far
Just when this season was starting to lull a little, twists and turns a plenty in store in this episode. Through Joe, we witness the devastating effects torture and indoctrination can have on an individual, it becomes clear where his loyalties lie. Elsewhere, the nazi doctor and his wife scenario is finally put to bed. Plenty of loose ends tied up, and a twist at the end worthy of a season finale.
