Kenny (2006)
Warm and truly wonderful
This is a must see film for anyone who appreciates warmth and gentle humour. Somehow on a shoestring budget the Jacobson brothers have made a film which encapsulates working class life and love personified in the wryly humorous figure of plumber Kenny. I initially thought the monologue narrative might prove a little cumbersome, however the writing was simply so good, and the one liners so frequent, that I was rapidly absorbed into Kenny's story. There is drama, pathos, and some delightful table-turning. A "fish out of water" subplot will be amusing for American viewers, a little like "The fastest Indian in the world". Kenny is up there with "The Castle" in depicting Melbourne working class life in a manner reminiscent of the great English Ealing studio comedies of the 1950s.
The Librarian: Return to King Solomon's Mines (2006)
Unfortunately, just a sequel
We were excitedly waiting for the release of the sequel to one of our favourite recent films, and managed to rent the DVD on its release in Australia. My family loved it, but I was a little disappointed. It lacked the one-liners of the first film, and much of the charm of the bumbling Flynn had also dissipated. The special effects were OK and there were a few laughs, but nothing of the absurdity which delightfully infected the original. The absence of Sonya Walwag was palpable, and neither Bob Newhart nor Jane Curtin really seemed to get into the film as they did with "Spear". This is not to say it is a bad film, but it does seem to play it a little by the numbers. There is one very obvious reference to a classic film, but nothing like the little teasers scattered through the original.
