Baby Reindeer (2024)
Brilliant storytelling
Usually I am one who gets mad at characters making poor choices in a story, but here their choices, though seem poor, are all logically and emotionally consistent. I believe their arcs; not even, I am fully on board. If they were to be in these situations and had made "better" choices, that would have been strange. Because what society deems to be "better" is not what they truly desire.
I got through the first season in one sitting as it fully grabbed my attention. I'd look forward to more but it is hard to imagine the same story continuing on for much longer without an agonizing end, for both the viewers and the characters.
Brilliant performance from Richard Gadd.
Bad Surgeon: Love Under the Knife (2023)
Where's the science?
As many have said I think the focus is wrong in this documentary, but then again I feel like perhaps they just don't have better material or didn't try to find them, so making this woman the focus was easier.
I struggle to believe a medical institute with such reputation and all these surgeons around him did not question a thing. Surely when something this groundbreaking were published other scientists/doctors would have looked into it and checked the viability. It applies to every scientific field and is the rite of passage. Somehow it just didn't happen? That's truly the most unbelievable part.
Was there no papers published? No peer reviews? No one bat an eyelid when experimental procedures this ahead of time was performed on humans? The doctors, the hospitals, are all complicit.
Marry Me (2022)
Everything is bad, I was stuck on a plane.
Even the music is bad, everything went downhill from there. Nothing was believable, it seemed like no one tried. I'm glad the crew got paid and can pay rent I guess.
100 Humans (2020)
Save your time
I had assumed from the marketing of this show that it's going to be mostly a reality show packaged as a social science experiment, and well, I was right. It's a so bland, and their attempts at trying to be funny is boring at best and cringy most of the time. Within the first few episodes they must have mentioned that they exploit their unpaid interns 10 times, which is not funny at all. But they will just kept throwing the same bit at you.
Army of the Dead (2021)
Tolerable
There are so many plot holes that you just have to let them all go or you won't finish this movie. Past the hour mark I put it on 1.5x and it was totally tolerable. Just don't expect to get anything out of this other than 2 hours of time spent not completely bored. It's *somewhat* entertaining. I'm sure that many people got paid to make this film, so good on them!
Wo men yu e de ju li (2019)
Best realistic drama I've seen in a long time
As a person who grew up in a unhappy Taiwanese home around workaholic journalists and with similar problems (though not to such degree), I think this series depicted everything so accurately that it was almost triggering to me. There were scenes where I can almost see my family members in. I probably personally know a real life representation of every single character shown in this series. Their stories are seldom told in such a wholistic way. I applaud the production team for doing such a fantastic job.
There are some acting in the series that were not 100%, but the overall execution is still top notch.
I don't know how people would say this is unrealistic... it was too real to me.
Uncut Gems (2019)
Very upsetting
It's amazing how upsetting this film made me feel. I couldn't stand it, and I think it's completely as the film intended.
Jojo Rabbit (2019)
Cute
I enjoyed the film, but it wasn't too memorable. I liked Scarlett Jo's performance but that's about it. I never found any parts of the movie funny, but the flat jokes weren't terrible I guess. Some parts did had me tearing up. It's a decent movie.
Extinct or Alive (2018)
Passionate host
I like the show and I like the host. His passion is contagious.
However, being Taiwanese, I did find his episode in Taiwan somewhat disappointing, which led me to wonder how people from the other countries he visited feel like in those episodes.
The "drunk porters" he met there were from native Taiwanese tribes, and yes the tribes are known to drink a lot, it is normal in their culture. Dr. Chiang tried to tell Forrest this, and explained why it is important to look at things from the tribe's perspective, but Forrest completely discarded the advice and was straight out rude to the people who owned and lived on this land for thousands of years. In the show he had said that the civilization expanding into the nature is the biggest cause of extinction, which means he should also understand that "people from the cities, with their governmental regulations" hold no moral high ground on this topic, and coming in to tell the natives how to live their life is just arrogant.
It has to be a conversation, and people like Dr. Chiang understands and works hard on having the conversation for decades. It's disappointing because I think he does understand this type of nuances like he did with the Zanzibar episode, but Forrest did not show the respect in this episode at all.
Overall I still find the show interesting and educational.
