The Grudge (2019)
4/10
What happens in Japan, should just stay there...
4 January 2020
While I commend the filmmakers for the atmosphere and getting some pretty good actors together, 'The Grudge' just outright fails on every other level. The talent and atmosphere on display just feel wasted on these tired and obvious ideas and jump-scares. Clearly, someone in the studio wanted to keep their hands on the license and had the cast and crew rush out this unscary and uninspired mess. For the very first Horror film of the new year, you'd be wasting your time watching this. Easily, a skip for me.

I'm dreaming of a (better) Black Christmas!
21 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Sure, the film looks pretty. That's still not enough to save this unnecessary cash-grab. Yes, I said cash-grab. Special thanks to the creators of 'Friday the 13th' can't settle on a deal to get the franchise out of development hell, we couldn't get the much-fabled 13th film released on Friday the 13th; possibly set during Christmas (just throwing that idea out there). Instead, Horror fans are given a poor and unnecessary second reboot of 'Black Christmas' that nobody asked for; complete with terrible characters, awful editing, bloodless body count, and absolutely no scares. Blumhouse and every cast and crew member should've known better. Perhaps if the creators spent less time being "woke", they could've made a film that doesn't put audiences to sleep.

The Haunted Pipebomb!
7 December 2019
'Girl on the Third Floor' was a pretty welcomed surprise. This may not be the kind of film that will blow you away with its story and the ending kind of hurts it. However, it wasn't enough to truly damage the film, in my opinion. Especially, when you consider that the movie has so much good going for it. That being, the atmosphere, effects, and acting. The latter being the best reason to watch this movie. Wanting to see more of CM Punk in possibly more films that showcase his natural charisma is a given for me, but 'Girl on the Third Floor' has also made me want to keep director Travis Stevens on my radar.

Rest In Peace, Childhood...
1 November 2019
The film is called 'The Banana Splits Movie', I don't know what else you're expecting. It's a hilarious slasher-comedy with amazing gore effects and plenty of love to the source material; despite the added Horror elements. Not ALL the comedy works and the human characters aren't that well-written, but what else would you expect from a movie like this? It's just a simple Horror romp that may scare your kids and make you laugh.

Still enjoying the little things...
18 October 2019
This is a sequel for fans of the first 'Zombieland', simple as that. It's not here to try and persuade mainstream critics into actually liking a Horror movie, not to make a statement on society, or give you a glimpse into the director and/or writers' state of mind. It's here to say, "Sorry we kept you all waiting, now let's get back to business!" That business being zombie gore, gross-out gags, cheesy one-liners, and jokes about men who drive minivans. The main four actors give it their all and have fun as they slip back into their beloved roles and some of the new additions are a treat. The only downside is that it's mostly the same old song and dance. Of course, it all depends on whether or not you enjoyed the first movie. If you did, then I'm confident that you'll enjoy this one immensely.

No autographs...or entertainment.
14 September 2019
I'm not going to lie and say that the idea of an obsessive fan tormenting a celebrity isn't an interesting idea, because it is; even it's not the most original. However, it's the execution that ruins it. The film just seemed rushed, yet I felt completely bored. All of this and yet they attempt to make you feel something for these characters. Obviously, the filmmakers failed. The side characters are forgettable, the actor character is unlikable and Travolta's character is the most offputting and offensive character I've ever seen.

27 Years, can it still float?
14 September 2019
For those who read the book or grew up with the mini-series, you might not be surprised that this half of the 'It' story is inferior to 'Chapter One'. However, this is still an amazing sequel and a good Horror film in its own right. Even despite the runtime, awkward bits of writing and the enormous clown shoes this sequel tries to fill after the incredible first movie, 'It: Chapter Two' still offers fantastic acting, effective scares and a truly gut-punching ending for characters we've basically grown with from one of Stephen King's greatest stories ever told.

The terror you can find at your local library...
10 August 2019
The best way to explain 'Scary Stories' is this, it's 'Goosebumps' for adults. This is basically a love letter to Alvin Schwartz's collection of tales. In my opinion, there's just as much atmosphere and genuine fear leaping from the celluloid as it leaped from the original pages all those years ago. Not even the lackluster effects and overuse of jump-scares could hinder this picture. As it's the film's tone, twists, characters, and creepy score that helps this story be as scary as it could be in the dark.

In desperate need of a wake-up call...
20 July 2019
A complete waste of time, yes. However, at least it was short. I don't know about the original, but 'Return to Horror Hotel' is nothing but a cheap knockoff of a Full Moon production or a Troma film without any of the cult movie charm. This movie fails so hard that it's actually kind of funny in some areas. Still, no excuse for bad acting and unoriginality. I recommend staying away from this one, as well as the first movie. From first impressions alone, I imagine that the first 'Horror Hotel' is just as terrible, if not worse than this travesty.

Croc you like a Hurricane!
14 July 2019
I know that some people are kind of on the fence with this one, but trust me when I say that this really is a fun Creature Feature. 'Crawl' doesn't try to poke fun at itself but is still fun and startling at times. The acting is top-notch and there's plenty of monster violence to quench any Horror fans thirst. So what if it's not the most original film out there, that does not change the fact that this movie has the right amount of tension to keep you hooked.

This IS unoriginal, friend! (Weremoose Reviews)
22 June 2019
So, Hollywood finally got away with remaking 'Child's Play'. But, is the new movie bad like some thought it would be? Well, does anyone remember the 1998 remake of 'Godzilla'? I like to think of that movie is a perfect analogy. As a 'Child's Play' movie, it's one of the worst things ever conceived. As its own movie, however, it's entertainingly bad. The kills were cool, the acting was good, and there were some bright spots to help make this version stand out. Just keep in mind that it's the lackluster effects, lack of consistency and the lack of scares that will eventually make this version forgotten. To be fair though, it could've been worse. It could've been 'Seed of Chucky'.

Night...of the Living Deadpan!
15 June 2019
This movie knows it's dumb. In fact, this movie knows it's a dumb movie. The thing I respect the most is how much fun this movie has with poking fun at its own absurdity, while also remaining faithful to the Zombie genre. Sure, it can move at a snail's pace at times. However, the times when the film gets going, the ludicrous cast and meta-writing take you for a joy ride with not so much speed, but definitely a need for brains.

We're gonna need more scares for this barbie!
8 June 2019
I wasn't expecting this movie to be perfect, but I was surprised with what I ended up liking. 'Boar' may seem like a chore to sit through and it's definitely not scary. But, I don't regret watching it as the actors were on point playing fun characters, the monster looked cool and there's plenty of blood to satisfy some gorehounds. Trust me, mates...the movie is not as "Boar"-ing as it sounds.

Just couldn't seem to "conjure" up some real terror
20 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Much like 'The Nun' from last year, there were things I liked and things that I didn't like. Unlike some of the other films that share the same universe, like the main films and the 'Annabelle' spinoffs. If they had focused more on building tension and less on building the world of the 'Conjuring' universe, 'The Curse of La Llorona' could've worked as its own entity (no pun intended). However, what we end up with is a cascade of jump-scares held together only by the acting and the occasional sense of dread. Yet, still manages to be the more entertaining entry into this prolonged franchise.

Hell hath no fury, like a reboot.
13 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Should there have been a Hellboy reboot? Absolutely not! Is this film still fun? Surprisingly, yes! Not as fun as I would've liked, it's definitely rushed, and seems to play Hot Potato with its genres without all the consistency of the original movies. However, this film's action, creepy creatures, jokes, and performances will keep you more than satisfied; at least until its obvious sequel-baiting. This movie isn't perfect, but it's every bit the "cult comic-book monster popcorn flick" that 2018's 'Venom' wishes it could've been.

Sometimes...Change is better.
6 April 2019
I truly hate to compare this movie to the original but I feel as though I had no choice. I will say, however, that both versions of one of my personal favorite King novels are equally-excellent for different reasons. As far as this adaptation, I may have come to see how they would change the story and add to the chilling atmosphere but I stayed for the near-perfect cast who knocked it out of the park in one of Stephen King's most morbid and depressing works ever created.

Brother's gonna freak you out!
23 March 2019
The most interesting thing about 'Us' is the fact Jordan Peele doesn't just play with the themes of humanity, American society, and "Nature vs. Nurture", but I feel that he also plays with the audiences' and the critics' expectations of him as a filmmaker. Peele clearly wanted to prove that he wasn't just a funnyman who got lucky with 2017's 'Get Out' and he does so by coming back to the director's chair guns blazing with his naturally-terrifying and a surprising-funny second helping of Horror; complete with a chilling score and a cast of excellent actors. At this point, Peele has proved that he could hang with the big boys with this perfect modern-day Horror classic.

...Isn't there an app for stalkers?
9 March 2019
Aside from the minor gripes I have about 'Greta', I still think this was a very well-made thriller. With two amazing ladies leading this picture and giving top-notch performances, as well as great tension-building from Neil Jordan, I'm almost willing to forgive this film's unoriginality and annoying minor characters. It's only an hour and a half long, I'd say it's worth watching.

Why 'Tales From The Hood' Deserves SO Much Better?
25 February 2019
Years before multi-talented filmmaker/comedian/actor Jordan Peele exploded after the success of his directorial debut 'Get Out', director Rusty Cundieff and executive producer Spike Lee also blurred the lines between traditional Horror with the real-life horrors of the Black community; while also having a little bit of fun with its own premise. 'Tales From The Hood' was released timely, during the heightened popularity of urban-black youth films or "Hood Movies" of the 90s; such as 'Boyz n The Hood', 'Menace 2 Society', 'Set It Off', and 'Juice'. Much like those movies, 'Tales From The Hood' touches upon many hot-button topics like gang violence, racism, and police corruption; topics that are still relevant in today's society.

Blow out the candle and wish for more Horror
16 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Personally, I thought the original was a better movie experience. But, that's usually how it is. Sure, this sequel is unnecessary and the scares are nonexistent, yet I still had fun with this movie. Of course, there's going to be another sequel that will probably make this new series even more convoluted and excessive with alternate dimensions and time-travel sub-plots. For now, I can say that I did have fun with this film's funnier script, interesting twists and returning likable characters. 'Happy Death Day 2 U' won't blow you away, but I guarantee that you'll have some fun.

There really is art to die for...
2 February 2019
You see, even within the horror community, not every film is going to be everyone's cup of tea. That's the best way to explain 'Velvet Buzzsaw'. Some may be turned off by its pretentiousness and terrible leads. Even some of the greatest works of art have their flaws. If you look past some of these flaws, however, you'll find some amazing actors giving their best, both chilling and beautiful imagery, all while not being overly serious by playing up the dry wit. Trust me when I say that this film is worth the watch. 'Velvet Buzzsaw' may not be perfect, but Netflix is a lot cheaper than some ritzy art gallery.

The first clue, find the scares...
4 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Truly not surprised that Sony would throw money at such a lackluster thriller with obvious twists and an even more obvious sequel-bait of an ending. While I appreciate the amount of effort shown from the suspense and the acting, it's still a by-the-numbers survival thriller that turned out only slightly better than what I initially thought it would.

Reunited and it feels so deadly.
8 December 2018
While others may call this movie the "Expendables of Horror", I consider it a silly and dark (figuratively and literally) love letter to the fans. If you want an obviously low-budget crossover with some of your favorite Horror movie actors in a ridiculous premise, you got it! Just remind yourself that this is low-budget so don't go in this film expecting something around the lines of 'Crimson Peak', in terms of scope or effects. This is a fun time for the Horror fans, no one else.

Your Mother writes unoriginal scripts in Hell!
1 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
You'd think that in this day and age, Hollywood would've utilized a little more quality control. Unfortunately, they were wrong with this one. Even the completely unoriginal tagline on the film's poster, "Death Is Only The Beginning" feels like the punchline to a slightly-funny joke that was then stolen by an unfunny comedian. Whatever little potential this movie had, the overreliance on annoying jump-scares and overuse of familiar demonic territory is sure to have this forgettable attempt of a horror film possess your nearest Wal-Mart bargain bin sometime soon.

Saving Private Dead-Head!
9 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I had a feeling that I would enjoy myself with 'Overlord', but I was not expecting a film this good. Aside from a few jump-scares, I have nothing bad to say about this movie. This movie is oozing with gore and atmosphere, the acting and characters are awesome, it perfectly blurs the line between fictional and non-fictional horrors and completely runs with the idea of using one of the most interesting historical events as the backdrop for a near-original horror story. This movie pulls no punches and it's about time.
