Trial & Retribution: Mirror Image: Part 1 (2007)
Once again a great programme/story by Lynda La Plante
I watched with more and more interest as the story unfolded. The acting was great I thought the parts played by the twins was exceptional. Once again Lynda la Plant has done a great job - just what I expected. The parts of the twins were very believable right up to the last scene. My only complaint was that I wished it had had a slightly different end to the programme. I remember the first programmes with the split screens, it works so well - showing what else is going on at the same time. I think also it could have been a little longer - the end left me with an answered question, perhaps I was not paying as much attention as I should have been. I would love to be able to buy the book and read it now - is there a book does anyone know?
The Poseidon Adventure (2005)
Great Remake
Normally I do not like remakes! But - this is an exception to the rule.
OK - so there is no tidal wave but there is a modern slant on things and they have used a terrorist threat. By doing this, it is not just a 'copy' of an old film.
I loved the way that the main characters were introduced at the beginning of the film - quite a novel idea.
I thought Rutger Hauer was a great improvement on Gene Hackman - a lot more believable as the Bishop. It is so good to see more of such a great actor. C. Thomas Howell was the Doctor and played the part very well. This was the first time that he had met Rutger Hauer since the film The Hitcher - I wonder he felt! It was said back then that he was a little afraid of Mr Hauer in that film! Sylvia Syms was superb as Belle Rosen even though I was a little fed up with her antidotes about her late Husband - but that is a personal view.
Considering that this was a TV movie I think it was very well made. The cast are to be really admired considering that they spent so much of their time in the water and in wet clothes.
What a shame there is another remake out later this year, this great TV movie is going to be forgotten all too soon.
Alfie (2004)
A poor remake
I do not really like re-makes! So this film had to have had some sort of interest for me to watch it in the first place! In this case, it was The films music -I am a fan of Mick Jagger, but even this was not as good as I had expected. I am afraid to say though for me, that this was the best part of the film.
Michael Cain is such a great act to follow - Jude Law did not have what it takes. Susan Sarandon was very good as Liz though and Ommar Epps (currently in 'House') I felt should have had a longer part. I do not understand though why everyone was smoking! Was it really necessary?
Having the film set in the US instead of England, I think helped. For those of us who have seen the original had less to compare the film with.
For me it was difficult to ascertain the time scale of the film - perhaps I was not watching as closely as I should have been.
This is still a film for the 'boys' though - if I had ever come across a guy like 'Alfie' I would have crossed the road - but of course that was the story.
