Burnistoun (2009)
Hilarious, refreshing, surprising, original, and funny.
This is a great show. I grew up in Scotland (10 years) and didn't struggle with the accents and dialects. Much. But some might.
This is a brilliant sketch show unbridled by commercial constraints, yet with a big enough budget for good sets and make up. The writing is fresh, brave, and hilarious. The acting is top notch.
...and Kirsty Strain is the kind of beauty I'd crawl over broken glass for, just to see her reflection in a window. A legendary screen beauty who I hope, and not solely because of her looks as she's a great talent, goes on to achieve great fame . A genuine stunner.
In fact, I hope these people go on to bigger and better things, they deserve it.
Give it a watch. It's actually good.
The Walking Dead: Secrets (2011)
Walking Dead becomes The Waltons
I loved the first series, but this series (2) is dreadful. The first was about survival, escape, being the last-people-on-earth, horror, suspense, chase scenes and excitement. It had great twists, good writing, and was fun to watch. You know, the stuff you expect from this genre. Now it's about about pregnancies, and inter-relationship hassles. Now that they are on a farm, I wouldn't be surprised to see this turning into a series about farming.
EVERYTHING that was good, no GREAT, about the first series is gone. In episode 5 for example, we had to the two main leads spending five minutes talking in a forest about girlfriends and sexual exploits from high school! Now I know characters need fleshing out, but it also needs to be relevant. I want to know that I'm being taken somewhere, not in circles leading nowhere. It seems like there's 30 minutes of bland filler in every episode now. Did they run out of money? Ideas? Where has the suspense gone? And I don't mean the 'soap opera' suspense about "Who is the father?" or "Will-they-won't-they?" Bring back the zombies, put in some more action of the type that is demanded, and necessary, of this genre, because it's in danger of leaving the genre behind and becoming The Waltons.
Series 1: 9/10 Series 2: 3/10
Dunkirk (2004)
A Very Good Drama-Documentary
Having recently watched this again, for a third time, I must strongly disagree with a previous reviewer who described this as meretricious rubbish.
It's true, some of the camera work was a little intrusive, and sometimes the music also got in the way, but these are minor irritations. On the whole, I thought the filmmakers told the story very well. Bearing in mind that at the time the incidents displayed were over over sixty years old, it must have been very difficult to tell the stories of so many men - from the government down to a private on the ground - with complete balance and historical accuracy, but overall I found everything very believable. The acting was top notch, with some well known faces, and Timothy Dalton's narration was also top drawer.
I would recommend this series wholeheartedly.
