Misanthrope (2023)
One of the worst movies I've ever seen.
I honestly cannot believe the good reviews for this movie. This movie was terrible. The acting, the plot, the ending, the scenes, the dialogue. Everything about it. I honestly laughed out loud several times during the movie. Wondering if this was for real. It was just all over the place . I am absolutely mystified as to why Shailene signed up for this. I think she's actually a great actress and this movie was ridiculous for her to be in. The rest of the actors could not act, on top of the dialogue being horrendous. Not to mention the fact that this looks nothing like Baltimore and I would know since I've lived here for 20 years. Everything about this movie just seemed off. This was honestly one of the worst movies I've ever seen in every way, and I had high hopes when I first read that Shailene Woodley was in it and reading what it was about.
Devils of Darkness (1965)
Good movie!
I'm one of those people who watch movies for enjoyment and entertainment... I'm not constantly over analyzing & comparing every little thing. I love love love Hammer films, and I Have also enjoyed Amicus and Tigon movies. I wasn't going into this movie looking to compare blow by blow lol. I like vampire movies and occult movies as well, So I enjoyed the combo of the two in this movie. I enjoyed Hubert Noel as the Count as well. I definitely think this movie deserves higher than it's overall rating. I normally enjoy more of a gothic, older vibe, and this was made and set in the '60s so I wasn't going in and expecting Twins of Evil lol. I personally enjoyed it.
Smile (2022)
Boring!
After all the buildup and advertising of this movie, I was really expecting something good and scary. I actually looked forward to seeing this. However, once the movie started, I immediately had the sense that it was going to be boring, simply put. And I was correct. Not only was it predictable with jump scares exactly when you expected them, but the movie was also boring in the literal sense. There seem to be unnecessary scenes and conversations, and the movie just seems to drag on much longer than it needs to. I kept waiting for it to get a little bit better and somehow become more interesting... But it really never did lol. Again, with all the build up for this movie, it was quite a disappointment in my opinion.
Ophelia (2018)
Awesome
As a lover of history and especially the "medieval" time period, I am normally a stickler for historical accuracy. Despite being a woman of color, I have never been a fan of woke/re-imagined versions of things. I'm also not a fan of ambiguous time periods, or movies where there seems to be is a mishmash of eras. Because again, I love historical accuracy. And as a fan of Shakespeare, I was leery of watching this movie as soon as I saw the word "re-imagined". However, this is one of the best movies I've ever seen lol. Personally, I love the costumeing (Even though they were clearly not historically accurate to any time period. To me, however, it was a beautiful movie to look at. The long ending scene itself is one of the best scenes I've ever seen in a movie. I love this film and that's all there is to it.
Twice Bitten (2021)
Good for Lifetime type BetHer movie
The reviewers on here are really taking this movie too lol. BetHer movies are the Black version of lifetime movies... Same type of movies, the same type of vibe, same type of acting. They are not meant to be taken seriously. Lol.
The Horror of Frankenstein (1970)
Good movie, something different
This is a simple review, not going to dive deep and try to over-analyze and pick apart everything. I am a huge fan of Hammer, and I love Peter Cushing, so yes I think all the Frankenstein movies starring Cushing are wonderful. However, I went into this movie with an open mind because I understand Hammer was trying something different. But....in the back of my mind I was honestly expecting myself not to like it simply because of the absence of Peter Cushing. I ended up really enjoying it. Still had pretty much that same Gothic feel, the same lavish interiors and costumes, and I enjoyed Ralph Bates, as this version of Baron Frankenstein. Movies are entertainment, and this movie was entertaining, in a good way. Veronica Carlson and Kate O'Mara we're both very good in their roles as well. I can say I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, while also still loving all the other Hammer Frankenstein movies.
