Rocket Boys (2022)
Amazing! Must watch
Story of two of the greatest scientists India ever had. Rocket boys is an amazingly entertaining watch which gives us a great insight into those times. Please don't be fooled into thinking this will be some boring preachy show, this is as good as it gets in terms of entertainment. While almost everything about the series is top notch, want to mention three things that stand out for me.
1. Jim Sarb gives a performance for ages. This is definitely his best and one of the best seen on Indian screen in recent times
2. Background score is riveting and apt
3. Dialogue are too notch and make every scene worth watching.
Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein (2022)
Amazing Season 1
The theme of encountering possessive partner is explored multiple times in Bollywood but the twist here is that father of the partner is a blood thirsty politician ready to make anything happen for her daughter.
Overall the plot is so strong that there are multiple ways the story could have flowed but the way writers take is not the worst one.
All actors have done an amazing job, Saurabh Shukla is brilliant. Its a joy ride from episode 1 to episode 8, it's moves really fast and you are left wanting more ...can't wait for season 2.
PS: Very surprised people have not liked it, can only think it is because of dislike of the genre.
Mumbai Diaries (2021)
One of the best so far!
Absolutely riveting medical drama with a background all too familiar for most Indians. The series gets off to a rollicking start with the first 2 episodes making full use of the angst around the premise and ends with a bang in the last 2 episode.
While it meanders a bit in the middle you are still invested. Everything works well, story, direction, performances and casting!
Indori Ishq (2021)
Below Average, uneven, illogical and looong
If you have high expectation from this one then this will dissapoint you...It is not really similar some of Ritviks previous work which was real...here everything seems to be made up conveniently ....Guy hails from a middle class family but you want to show him a acquainting in a posh south Mumbai flat ...no problem just say some relative has lent his house...A south Mumbai girls asks our boy to share Altaf Raja song with her.... Our guy has been staying a dingy room next to sea which is in a terrible shape but his cool South Mumbai friends don't have an issue frequenting the place...every girl south Mumbai girl is waiting to be impressed by our hero...and much more....overall there is nothing new....love story does really have the sting not honesty...writing is not fresh overall really below average series.
Performances are the only saving grace though as most actors have performed well..
Akele Hum Akele Tum (1995)
Movie Ahead of it's time!
Mansoor Khan has given Bollywood some of it's most memorable movies and most underrated of his movies is AHAT.
Apparently movie did not do too well on it's release and I can understand completely that not because movie lacked anything but because it was clearly much ahead of it's time.
There are a lot of reviews saying this is a remake of Kramer vs Kramer and abhimaan, I haven't seen Kramer v Kramer but from what I read apart from the similarity of parents fighting over child custody don't see any other similarity. Definitely this has nothing to do with Abhimaan which was about insecurities experienced by couples.
This film is what it is because of great direction, wonderful performance by everyone with the lead pair standing out. Aamir Khan is at his very best here, so it Manisha Koirala. Anu Malik is in top form too very memorable Album.
Overall staying in commercial realm this is a very thought provoking film...what really stands out for me is that for once lead characters are not portrayed as being perfect...they all have their fallcies...you can side by the women or man depending on how you see it ...
Breaking Bad (2008)
It is path breaking! Will stay with you for a while
I had heard a lot of breaking bad on review sites but never really had a oppurtunity to watch it and when i did i was immediately hooked. No wonder it is rated as one of the best of all time. The writting in the series is what really keeps you hooked and season after season you dont want to stop watching.
Characters are amazing and thier graphs are really engaging... you start out supporting Walt and characters are so well built that even when you see Walt going wrong you still dont want him to lose. In a lot of ways Walt is an anti-hero and you dont mind getting behind him.
Everything about the show is first rate. It is a true gem. Have just watched it once, but i am sure i will watch it a few more times.
Kirik Party (2016)
Interesting Premise but overall a huge letdown!
I don't watch a lot of kannada films...I pick and choose and look for kannada films that are popular and we'll appreciated, hence happened to stumble on Kirk Party! The IMDB ratings ensured that I gave it a try and I did. Result: A little disappointed!
To start off I am really surprised that this film has such a cult following among audience...while everyone has a different taste but over the years I have seen that the really successful films have something unique that appeals to almost everyone the quantum of appeal could be different but appeal is undeniable.
What works for Kirk Party is without a doubt the premise of engg college, boy meets girl and heartbreak that kind of is a magic formula...add to it popular actors you have a recipe for success! However when I started watching this film the initial set up was fine, infact the first half keeps you hooked without absolutely blowing you away. However, the second half is a real dampener....the lethargic pace does no good...I almost had to wait when the movie would end... The story in the second half is very uneven and slow ...the life goes out of the film.... Technically everything is in place without being spectacular....Actors have done justice. May be I had very high expectations, I expected it to be a lot more fun...the heartbreak angle did not land effectively... thought was over stretched the second half was whimsical to say the least.
99 (2019)
Falls short by more than 1 percent
Not an avid kannada movie buff but stumbled on this movie thanks to Amazon Prime. Before watching I read up on the film and got to know it is a remake of another Tamil film titled 96. Since I had not seen the tamil film there was not reference point or benchmark. The premise of the film is very basic yet relatable and definitely had a lot of potential. A middle aged travel photographer meets his childhood girlfriend at a school reunion 20 years after they last saw each other. The girl has moved on and is married with a kid while the guy is still mourning over lost love.
Stories about school life, friends, first crush will always have takers, we all love to go down that lane but strong characters make this journey memorable. This is precisely where 99 fails. Both the lead characters are very sketchy and does not connect as it should. What adds to the woes are some seriously mediocre performances and direction. Ganesh as Ram is a total misfit and unconvincing. Bhavana suffers mainly from a poorly written role and is not relateable. The actors playing younger version of the lead pair just about pass the muster while the supporting cast do their job well.
Music by Arjun Janya is average, the slow pace makes you feel that some of the songs are best skipped. Cinematography is nothing to write home about, direction could have been better so too the writing.
Overall not a great watch, 99 does fall short of expectations!
