Hogwarts Legacy (2023)
Immersive but boring
Hogwarts and the surrounding lands look and feel amazing. The story lines, combat, puzzle solving, etc are all disappointing. Basically a lot of busy work to complete a very expansive game.
After playing the game for a while you might notice: lack of attention to how the broom flying/camera position is designed. Simple work arounds to dark magic puzzles. Redundancies in combat and hidden challenges. Insignificant rewards for time consuming challenges. A story line which requires you to choose responses but then brings you down the same path either way.
It feels to me like they bit off way more than could chew and then got pressed against a deadline.
Natural Born Killers (1994)
Don't like the message... shoot the messenger.
Writing this in the wake of yet another unprovoked mass shooting, it is more apparent than ever that Americans have a, complicated, often contradictory, and unsettling, relationship with violence. With age, this film has proven to be exactly what Stone always claimed it was: a commentary on American violence and our collective reluctance to address it.
Interestingly enough, this film was made around the same time as, Interview With The Vampire, and Brahm Stoker's Dracula, two other films with unrepentant killers and glorified violence but neither were met with the same degree of controversy. -Face it, this film holds a mirror to the audience and that's uncomfortable.
Don't Look Up (2021)
Poor satire IMO
I like satire but really disliked this movie. Social commentary is fine but the premise was all off. Scientific community relies on peer review publication (and validation) of major claims. Going far afield of the established process for scientific news (especially something as significant as the end of the world) would just be ridiculous... like the movie.
The Shooting (1966)
Precursor to Cormack McCarthy and the Cohen Brothers
This movie may have been 30 years ahead of its time. It feels more current today than when I first saw it 15yrs ago.
If you like the grit of the unsettled American west and enjoy a striped down plot with memorable understated performances, check it out.
Nicholson's presence is unforgettable.
Excellent cinematography.
