The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)
Best Movie this Year
This is hands down the best movie I have seen this year. I was never a huge Mario player although I did play many of the games at one time or another but only while at friend's houses. You don't need to be a fan of Super Mario to appreciate the story and animation in this movie. At the end of movie I can't think of anything that I would change or that I disliked. It felt like a complete and well written movie in its entirety.
I am an extremely critical person when it comes to movies and there is almost no movies that pass my judgement without there being something that I really disliked or wished they had changed. I am very shocked to find that this movie did not disappoint me on any level. I was left completely satisfied and wanting to watch it again in the near future.
This is an absolute winner of a family movie and an adult movie. There is no agenda pushed in the movie, it does not emasculate the male characters, it has strong female characters, it does not try to turn your children against their parents, it does not contain crude humor or innuendos. Many movie companies would do well to learn lessons from this movie as it is a perfect example of how to make audiences happy. I highly suggest you go see this movie as long as you are a fan of animated movies then you will absolutely enjoy it.
Thank you Universal Studios for making something so wonderful.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023)
Better than previous D&D movies but still not great
I had high hopes for this movie but it did not go much beyond the level of previous D&D movies. So many moments of feeling like, well that whole series of events was completely useless and cliché dialogue lines that have been reused to death in films.
There were definitely times that were starting to get good but then it turned course back to boring dialogue and basic action scenes that barely held my attention.
What really prevented this movie from being something great is the same thing that has prevented D&D movies from ever being anything noteworthy, boring basic storyline. They had the technology to give us amazing graphics and they had a good cast. However, they just didn't pay enough attention to the actual story.
There are so many amazing, unique and original directions they could take a D&D movie given the extensive amount of books and lore that is readily available. Unfortunately, they seem determined to never take advantage of these resources and instead we are again presented with something that is hardly worth watching the first time.
The Spine of Night (2021)
A Disapointing Waste of Time
I had high hopes for this film. The animation is just simply terrible. They attempted to make something similar in vain to Fire and Ice and failed completely. This movie falls flat on it's face right from the beginning.
Voice acting was ok but maybe I was so distracted by the abysmal animation that I couldn't judge it properly. The background art was of good quality. I only wish they had found better animators.
The film is a good lesson in how not to pay homage to the style of the 1970's fantasy animation genre. This is the most disappointed I have ever been in an animated movie.
