Love Lies Bleeding (2024)
A fun pulpy thriller
I was intrigued by the trailer for this film, especially due to the cast, the tone and the fact that it was an A24 film. The film itself has a mysterious energy and tone from the very beginning, felt like a throwback pulp thriller. Definitely delivered on what it set out to do. Kristen, Katy, Anna, Ed and Dave all delivered on their roles. The chemistry between Kristen and Katy is top notch and gives a certain freshness to a lesbian relationship and power dynamic in film. It keeps you right on the edge and then as it starts to unravel it draws you in even more. Honestly I wish that there were more original films like this being made.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
Decent but definitely overrated
They get points for creativity and acting, but people these days just go bonkers for anything with multiverses and cool effects. Don't think it lived up to the hype.
Jodorowsky's Dune (2013)
Pure ego stroking, very disappointed
What is the fuss about? I don't get the praise for this documentary or for Jodorowsky. He just seems like a self-obsessed egomaniac. There is so little substance here that I'm surprised they could find 90 minutes. I was expecting some cool behind the scenes footage or stories, but this is just Jodorowsky praising himself for being a visionary who could change the world. He just seems like a quack.
Have a Good Trip: Adventures in Psychedelics (2020)
The idiot's guide to psychedelics
This is the dumbed down, comedians version of psychedelics. A couple of mindless anecdotes presented by some big names (Sarah Silverman, Sting) and a few boneheads. The only reason I gave it a three is the animation is solid at points.
This is also the type of content that is making me start to dislike Netflix and will probably lead me to cancel my subscription soon. Netflix is creating content for the lowest common denominator of viewer. Truly sad. This is the psychedelics documentary for people who also enjoy Tiger King. Anybody with half a brain should find good documentary films and real insight into the psychedelic experience elsewhere.
