The Apartment (1960)
Probably the best rom-com ever been made
"How can a romcom movie ever win an Oscar?" you might ask. The Apartment is your answer.
I absolutely adore the movie. Unlike anything we can ever see, it's realistic to the core, which helps it give off a somewhat sad vibe and only lightened up because of Mr.Baxter. It gives you a real story of real people with stories you can actually find in real life, even something you can relate.
Baxter reminds me so much of Gene Kelly in Singing in the rain. Such a vibrant character yet have to subject himself to his senior just like all of us do. He has dreams to fulfill, people to satisfy, bills to pay, just like all of us do, but his personality is so wonderful despite the misperception that others have towards him or the pressure from people he has to deal with.
Miss Kubelik reminds me of loads of women, even ones in these modern days, the people who still foolishly believe in lies from men who don't deserve their love, the people who sometimes overlook the really nice ones, the people who are unfortunate, love-wise. We struggle to fight our own tendencies, and probably need a hero like Baxter to make a move and save our ass.
Baxter is a hero in a non-action movie. And we can maybe find him among us.
The Seven Year Itch (1955)
It shows why Marilyn is iconic
On first sight, I thought this movie, to a certain extent, romanticize cheating and affairs. By the end, it still gives you a feeling that it does but I know for sure it wasn't. The story is humorous thanks to Ewell and his character's wild imagination, as well as the charm and the innocence of The Girl.
It's fun to see how such a modern issue being dealt in such a classy movie from the 50s, which is something makes this movie so classic when being compared with the movies of the genres these days, those are more shallow and lack good humor. So bringing myself to the past to is definitely a wonderful option
Despite Ewell having such a great performance, I still want to talk more about Marilyn. I'm a big fan of Grace Kelly. But there was something about Marilyn that makes her so different from Kelly and you can't help yourself not adoring her. Kelly is a symbol of grace and fantastic aura while Marilyn gives you a charming girl next door vibe with her platinum hair, classic red lips and eyes as blue as the ocean. The Girl first appears as a playful character who sometimes seems naively superficial. But she's more than that. She has her own depth and you start to realize that's her personality. By the end of the movie, we are just exactly like Ewell, swept off our own feet.
Fight Club (1999)
Jekyll and Hyde in a modern twist
It's really funny how this movie makes me feel so baffled yet I was still carried away by it. The movie was profound, filled with metaphors, memorable quotes and figurative things. It was satisfying with a surprising twist that change everything. It makes sense of a lot of things by explaining the link among all the hints they've left
Then Came You (2018)
Death has never been as blunt and honest
The first half of the movie, I previously thought, was superficial. Skye and Calvin had so much dynamics together yet it could have been executed in a way that viewers could find it more profound. While Maisie Williams had an amazing performance, Asa Butterfield's acting fluctuates throughout the movie.
However, the second half shows why it deserves a 10 stars for me. In theatre, this type of illness-death story has been told plenty of times, creating a good number of conventions and cliche for the genre. This movie gives you something completely different. It depicts a beautiful and wonderful platonic friendship that people have rarely seen even though we desperately need one (despite the fact that deep down inside, we still ship them because of the chemistry they had together). In addition, it deals with cancer and death in the most brutal yet very blunt and honest way, which hits you really hard at your emotion.
I love the direction it chose to take. It's cute and vibrant and filled with energy, even till the last minute of the movie, despite how tough the problem they were dealing with.
Personally, as a person around their age who is also working on figuring out myself, I relate to them considerably and feel inspired significantly by this movie. It's an important one. One that I would love to recommend to everyone.
Captain Marvel (2019)
It's an okay superhero movie but it doesn't deserve the toxins
Well as a big Marvel comic fangirl, I have always been a big fan of Carol Danvers, way before there was any rumor about the movie about her being made. So yeh, I'm really hyped and enthusiastic about it.
I don't ever set any expectations for superhero movie simply because I get really full fangirl mode over a lot of things in those movies and usually overlook other stuff. Hence, I can't say if this movie lived up to my expectations.
All I can say is that I enjoyed it. Brie Larson had a wonderful performance. They tell a story that girls can definitely relate to (I did), not about being a woman, but about being a person embracing its power to evolve. Maybe this explains why a lot of woman (including myself) adore this movie.
If you pay enough attention, you'll realize she is the first and only hero who doesnt have romance. And this is only one of the things in this movie that go against the prevalent conventions in superhero movies, which is something that took me aback and made me like this movie so much.
I like the soundtracks filled with 90s vibe. However, sometimes they are not used at the right moment, making the scenes less influential. The stunts was not very well executed, definitely less sophisticated and eye-satisfying than in other movies of the genre.
Overall, I do truly love this movie. The fact that it sparks a lot of controversy makes it easy to see how prevalent toxic masculinity is, meaning that it doesn't deserve so much hate and negativity not coming from the quality of the movie itself
Singin' in the Rain (1952)
Magic, Spice and Everything Nice
The best way to describe this movie is a musical, vibrant Charlie Chaplin styled movie. It truly is. It is impossible to watch it without smiling to yourself and rhyming to the songs. Sarcasm is so on point in this movie that I didn't know I could find such kind of humor from a movie made in 1952. It's wonderful in every sense and is full of energy and positivity that you would desperately want to bathe in the rain one more time.
I also start to think that some people in pink are the worst b****es ever. (Look at Umbridge in HP and Lina Lamont in this one and you'll know what I mean)
All in all, you just have to watch it to understand why this movie is claimed to be classic and has such a special place in many people's heart.
No Country for Old Men (2007)
The First To Ever Make Me Feel Too Shallow
There's a difference between a classic that you personally consider overrated and a classic that is too deep you can't comprehend at first sight. This one is the latter.
NCFOM differentiates itself from all other movies that constantly have to use music to pump adrenaline into the audience's vein. Instead, it does the job by showing and avoid telling, which is exactly what films should do but haven't be done enough.
The story is unconventional and unpredictable. Characters are complex and very well-portrayed. Javier Bardem certainly is the highlight of the movie, making his character original, unique and classic with his incredible performance as a mad, pathological killer.
Like I said, this movie doesn't tell a story. It shows. It even avoids overusing sound. Therefore, it relies heavily on cinematography and acting to develop, which allows it to have such excellent shots and turns some scenes into classic.
I was so confused by the end of the movie and have to turn to analysis to see it. I'm not usually that way, though. There's so many things about it that makes it incredible, especially the messages and metaphors that the directors want to deliver. It's visually fascinating and internally profound.
Definitely have to see it again
Byuti insaideu (2015)
Beauty inside and outside
The concept of the movie is very new, yet I would only give it a 7 - 8. It's beautiful and decent. No drama. No third wheelers. Just two people meeting, falling, struggling then learning to embrace their happiness.
However, I still give it a 10. Partly, because Han Hyojoo smoothly transformed into her character. It's not a difficult role, but she's my favorite actress so I guess I can be quite biased. But the main reason why I give it a 10 is due to the cinematography. Shots are taken in the angles that can capture the perfect light and perfect scenes, giving it a dreamy, heaven-like feels, sometimes even very picturesque. The color of the film is of a vintage beige tone that matches my type perfectly.
Velvet Buzzsaw (2019)
A great take on bringing arts to movies
The movie is not something that can hold your attention. It's not really a horror movie, more like a dark slasher comedy.
Its take on the subject of arts and appreciation of arts is certainly new and tempting. Some shots are astoundingly stunning. The idea behind the story is profound. However, it needs more to add. There are parts that are excessive. The story itself is underdeveloped.
Wanbyeokhan tain (2018)
Comically Naked
The title of the movie perfectly the message of the movie: Perfect strangers. They are the people you think you know, people who are so close to you yet there are so many things they keep for themselves, secrets, lies and affairs.
Its storyline is easy to understand yet very well-developed. Different issues are touched in order to show the extent of how hypocritical, deceptive our lives can be. Everyone all have our secrets. Things we don't ever dare to confront or admit. Lives we have no courage to expose.
The ending is surprising and real at the same time, which makes the movie even better and more profound.
That's the thing I love so much about Korean/ Asian movies. Under the surface of an entertaining movie, they always manage to deliver a very humane message.
Upgrade (2018)
Unexpected
It's an incredible experience. A different story in the saturated genre of action and thriller. Bold, one-of-the-kind approach to a frequently-used storyline and later becomes more and more well-developed. Excellently executed shots, thrilling fights scenes that smoothly create transitions from fun comedy to gore in the snap of the fingers. The movie ends with a never before double plot twist that truly defines the name of "a plot twist" - very unexpected and I don't think anyone could have seen that coming
Seongnan hwangso (2018)
Good enough
Having very few explosion scenes, the movie focuses on the action scenes more, yet it is not satisfying enough. I can say that Koreans are really good at creating antagonists that the viewer would love to loathe and despise - the type of evil guy with psychopathic behaviors. The movie sometimes tries to add some comical and funny elements, some are good, some aren't.
Amsusarin (2018)
1 hour 50 minutes of getting intrigued
A movie doesn't have to be a thriller to be able to seduce its audience into sitting down and follow the story till the very end. This movie is one of those kinds.
From the beginning, it already tells you that this is not a typical criminal - thriller film. It is more than that. Dark Figure of Crime depicts a psychological battle between a detective and a prisoner who admitted to have murdered 7 people yet no body was ever found.
The characters are certainly very developed and well portrayed by the excellent actors. A persistent detective, who is determined to find the whereabouts and remains of the victims, against an intelligent, cunning killer who takes advantage of the loopholes in the law system to literally get away with murder and creates the game between the two of them. Moreover, such sophisticated characters are, fortunately, played by two very talented actors to successfully bring to the screen a beloved detective and a psychopathic yet well-mannered killer.
The story is well-developed not just because it is based on real events but also because it is in the hand by a dedicative director. Some shots are certainly beautiful and expensive, especially the last scene where the detective was on his own, continuing to find the bodies of other victims. It really shows how difficult and tiring the job can be, and at the same time, illustrates the fact that he's a loner in the quest of finding the missing
