Citizen Kane (1941)
Classic!
I loved this movie. I think it does a great job in leaving the audience guessing. Throughout the whole movie the audience is left wondering what exactly rosebud really means. Olsen Wells is yet again the main character in a film he also directed but his character is really just the topic of the movie, rather than in the movie physically. Wells use of different camera angles is brilliant especially for 1941 and adds a sense of authenticity to the film. Truly one of a kind film and a clear basis for future films after its release.
Notorious (1946)
Brilliant
This movie is air times confusing, but nonetheless brilliant. Along with Hitchcock's directing styles, i think this movies plot is very interesting. This plot is more complex than most plots in movies released around this time. Most of these plots were very simply and weren't hard to understand. But, this one is more complex with the different messages it has tucked away in the film. Hitchcock's camera work is key in emphasizing the different lies within the film. Overall, i liked this movie.
Bonnie and Clyde (1967)
very groundbreaking
This film was very groundbreaking because it came out in the start of "new hollywood". It showed realistic things that were not really being shown at the time due to the censorship code. But, with the dismantle of the code the filmmakers had a lot of room to try out new things never before done. A scene that perhaps best reflects this is in the end when Bonnie and Clyde are gunned down by police. They're shot several upon several times and practically lit up with bullets. This scene is very gory, but it shows their bodies being continuely torn apart with bullets. This is something that audiences back in 1967 weren't used to seeing due to the code. This film became an example of what films could now show. Great movie!
Taxi Driver (1976)
chilling movie!
This movie is very good. It's disturbing in many ways but it works. I don't think anyone could've played the role better than Robert De Niro. This is Scorsese's groundbreaking film that really put his name out in Hollywood. His directing style helps tell the story by adding the chilling effects with different cuts and angles. Overall, i think this movie was great and really fun to watch!
Pulp Fiction (1994)
AWESOME FILM!!!
This film is great for a number of reasons. The soundtrack is one reason because it's full of classic rock songs that really fit the mood of the scenes in which they appear in. Tarantino does an excellent job at providing non diegetic sound to capture the feel of each scene. The acting is also great in this film. Samuel L Jackson is very scary yet hilarious and you really believe he is the character in real life. The quick cuts and different camera angles Tarantino uses in this film add to the mood of the film. The quick cuts help tell the audience that this is a fast and exciting movie. Overall, i loved this movie and recommend it to anyone and everyone.
The Women (1939)
Groundbreaking
The Women is a groundbreaking film for its time. In 1939, women did not have the same rights men had, and they were greatly underappreciated. So, with that being said this movie with an all women cast is certainty groundbreaking for its era. This film is very funny and I believe each actress delivers sharp and quick lines that add to the humor. Overall, I enjoyed this film.
Fantasia (1940)
BRILIANT
Fantasia is a Disney classic. I remember watching this movie when I was a younger child and I loved it. The music grabs your attention while the visuals of the animation bring your attention closer. Its truly amazing how this movie came out in the 1940's but yet it seems so advanced for its time. This movie is beautiful for a few reasons. One reason being its soundtrack. All the music in this film are so beautifully put together and match the scenes perfectly. The second reason being the visuals. Every scene is filled with color and its brilliantly vivid. Overall, I loved this film and I consider it a classic.
His Girl Friday (1940)
Funny and witty
His girl Friday is very funny. Some of the lines in this film had me crying from laughter. I love the way the actors and actresses delivered their lines. . I love how Rosalind Russell portrays her character. She's mean, fierce, but funny while doing so, and she means business. I think her acting is some of the best in the entire film. This movie is the definition of an early screwball comedy. Overall, I enjoyed this film a lot because it was funny.
King Kong (1933)
NOT GOOD
I have never liked any of the 1000 versions of King Kong they've done. I didn't even like the CGI King Kong so I of course didn't enjoy the super unrealistic puppet- like King Kong from this 1933 version. I don't enjoy anything about this movie, except possibly the special effects. The story to me is very boring and its hard tolerate to the character when the protagonist is a gorilla. The special effects impressed me however because they seemed complex for it being 1933 and all. The directing was decent but overall, I just did not like this movie. But, I will say its very cool how the special effects were used to show his stature and size. The special effects seemed very complex for the time period in which it was made.
Scarface (1932)
I love Paul Muni
I loved the 1983 Scarface so I figured I would love this one. Though they're two very different stories, they both share the same outlaw aspect and I enjoyed this one as well. Anyways, this movie was great to me because of the directing and the main actor, Paul Muni. I loved Muni in "I am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang" as much as I did in this movie as well. Muni delivers his lines perfectly in my opinion and that's what makes his character most believable. Muni also dressed the part, literally. To me, Muni just physically looks like a gangster from that era, not to mention his costume in the movie helps add to this. I loved how this movie was violent, but the director barely showed it. Instead he creatively found a different approach to display the violence, like showing the shadows on the wall during the massacre scene. Overall, I liked this movie and would recommend it to people.
Sherlock Jr. (1924)
I hate Silent films, but LOVED this one.
Sherlock Jr. is brilliant. It's very easy to watch seeing as how it's just under an hour. Its about an aspiring detective who believes he is solving a case, but in reality, it's just a dream. The shots in this movie are very unique, especially for 1924. My favorite scene is when Buster Keaton is "shadowing" the man in which he's trying to be like. Buster Keatons acting is genius. I believe it takes a specific skill to act in the silent film ear because you can't express your role through sound, so you must do it through physical acting. Overall, I don't enjoy silent movies often but this one was short and sweet and had me laughing more times than I could count.
The Circus (1928)
Interesting
I liked this movie surprisingly because i usually don't enjoy black and white silent movies. With that being said, i love chaplin and the way he animates emotion. I think this is why he was perhaps the best in the silent film era, because he doesn't need sound to show emotion. Overall the movie was good, i liked the plot and it was very funny
