The Purge (2013)
Boring unlikeable characters
From the very start there is not a singular character (other than the man who broke in to take shelter) that is likeable in this entire movie. The sister? Dating a guy who wants to kill her dad. The boyfriend? Explainable. The father? Money obsessed, but more likeable than the rest of them. The mother and the son are just stupid and almost got the entire family killed.
The entire premise from the get go is interesting, but the execution is not great. Why did all the villains dress up? Absolutely no need. The scariest parts were the suspenseful parts in the beginning, before anything even happened. Just overall rubbish.
The Internship (2013)
Out of Touch
The premise of the film - a film about internships at Google - is interesting. The choice of using 40 year old salesmen on the other hand, borders on creepy and unpleasant. Seeing the 40 year olds showing the 20 year olds 'how to drink', taking them to a strip bar, and telling the young girl that they're beautiful made me extremely uncomfortable. I don't think that sort of behaviour from older men should be acceptable, or touted in such a film. The same concept could have been created with a younger leads. All these factors led me to rate this a '4' - as there were some funny jokes occasionally throughout the film.
Office Christmas Party (2016)
Cringy and Unrelatable
None of the characters are relatable, none of the situations are believable, and this is clearly written by someone who has never worked in an office. Not rating a 1 because of some funny one liners, but overall all of the characters sucked - and not even in a good way where they are meant to be absurd, but in the way that they tried painting them as normal people and just completely failed. Like I said, I managed to watch till the end, which is why I'm giving it a 3 stars out of 10, but low quality overall.
Don't Look Up (2021)
Not cliche
Really enjoyed this film, and really enjoyed the ending to this film. It was perfect, not cliche, and it could happen in an alternative universe. My only problem is that some of the characters felt unlikeable and unrelatable - particularly the character of Jennifer Lawrence, and later on Leonardo Di Caprio. Because of this, I just didn't feel like they were real people, and couldn't relate to them unlike his other films - Vice, and The Big Short. But overall very enjoyable, still gets quite a high rating!
The Exorcist (1973)
What was this movie
The only reason why I'm not giving this a 1 star is because the special affect makeup on the child were good. Now to get into the reasons why I'm subtracting 8 stars:
1) Where oh where did the demon come from? Why did it come? In the Director's cut, we were in Northern Iraq where the priest was facing off a statue in the desert, and we suddenly cut to Washington D. C. to an actress's house. With all the walking in the movie, you would've thought they would show you how the statue walked all the way to North America
2) There is literally no further information about the demon other than OOOOH SCARY DEMON
3) It possesses.... a kid. Like really an 8 year old. How and why is this meant to be scary??? Like cmon, people can take it lol. Now if it had possessed a priest, that would've been another matter - could've gone on a serial killer killing spree
4) The death of the priest came out of flipping nowhere
5) What was that Lieutenant stalker character???? Honestly that scene went nowhere
6) It just goes 0 to 100 - a bunch of random plotlines that were never followed. What happened to the kids father in Rome? How did the demon get to the priests mum?
And I have more. But yes, severe disappointment, not a scary film lol.
A Clockwork Orange (1971)
Fascinating but no depth
I loved the imagery, and I could appreciate the artful taste and mastery of the scenes. But what was this story about? A psychopath with no redeeming qualities, who is very unrelatable. A plot that went... somewhere, but where there was no message.
Also the random Russian words - like why??? Are you trying to say that Russian is a vulgar language? There are plenty of British slang words that I'm sure could have been used in the 70s. No need to butcher the language.
However, this isn't a terrible film - well shot, interesting premise, but unrelatable characters and no real purpose to the storyline.
Contagion (2011)
Scarily Realistic
Obviously has a tad of Hollywood drama to keep the movie going, but it's scarily realistic given the way COVID-19 panned out. Kept me on my toes, was able to circle back most of the things that happened to stuff that happened in 2020. Amazing foresight, even if some dialogue was a bit cliche
Must watch now especially.
Géminis (2005)
Taboo Topic But Somehow Not Very Interesting
Long unnecessary shots, panning slowly in and out, dialogue that is unneessary and superfluous. Instead of focusing on the twins and how everything happened, the director instead emphasises people looking at themselves in the mirror and the most randomest of things.
Ending was questionable and open ended, which is a cop out. After the mother finding out - scene well executed - is the end the film. However - does she stop it? Who knows? Do they feel bad about it and stop it themselves? All the interesting questions are unanswered, just lots of scenes showing them having sex, which is the least interesting thing about the taboo itself.
Its still watchable though, so I rated it slightly below average.
The Office (2005)
Brilliant seasons 2-7
Amazing comedy, with drama, intrigue, friendship, and sadness. The Office has everything - but it did take a hit after Michael leaves the show in season 7. Just wasn't the same. They also butchered Andy's character, and Erin didn't seem to have much of a personality
... but really makes you laugh, a classic
Se7en (1995)
Interesting imagery, but a bit pretentious
The imagery was very unsettling and real for each of the seven sins, but I just couldn't get over how they found the serial killer based on the books which he checked out from the library. Like really? There's only one library in this city, and the serial killer uses that huge ass library instead of just buying the books from a book store? He had a huge ass library in his apartment anyway, so why would he be using the library? Just seemed weird that they were studying Dante while being detectives, it felt really.... pretentious. We're eng lit students now, not detectives
Also the final scene - also doesn't make sense with his motivations. He wants to punish each person because of a deadly sin, but he decides to ultimately kill himself for his deadly sin of envy - which he had because of one day? Like??? Idk I know it was meant to be scary but I just ended up laughing because of how unrealistic it all was
Overall average movie, giving it a 5 because I can tell lots of money was spent on it
Shutter Island (2010)
Masterfully crafted
It was an amazingly crafted film. The imagery and iconography was amazing. If I watch it over again, I am sure that all the scenes will be twice as impactful, and I will discover more new things about it.
The only thing that I disliked was the ending because I felt it was a bit empty. I felt very sad for the main character, and didn't feel like any justice was dealt. But that's how the world can be sometimes.
In summary - plot line and film technique intricate and amazing, but I finished it feeling some type of emptiness.
Goodfellas (1990)
Interesting plot, shallow characters
While the plot was pretty great and fairly unpredictable, I couldnt relate to any of the characters. They all seemed shallow to me, and I couldn't understand them at all. Also the Carol monologues were so random, she was so weird.
But yeah, it was pretty entertaining, and the ending was acceptable, although I felt it could have been better.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
So amazing
The emotions, the plot, originality, everything tied together so well at the end - normally I criticise the way movies end, but this ending was phenomenal, not cliche at all. The brutality of the prison was well portrayed, and made me feel sorry for the characters.
All the characters were believable and had depth, and none of the scenes were dramatic, but there was tension throughout the film. I'm going to stop fangirling now, but this movie is my favourite tied with the Godfather!!
Requiem for a Dream (2000)
Amazing art, questionable story line
The edits and cuts and portrayal of the addiction were raw and extremely well edited. However, there were a few plot holes, like:
1) how did they catch them and send them to prison?
2) the diet pill thing - like in what world would they just keep giving her pills? Just like that with no checks
3) her friends ignoring her descent into madness, even though she was shown to be sociable at the beginning
-> also, wtf was up with Tyrone and his mum?? Would've loved an explanation about why he kept thinking about her. What happened?
The character development wasn't very extensive or believable.
However, like I said, cinematography was wonderful, amazing cuts, and I still feel a naseous feeling at the pit of my stomach. And I want to say no to drugs. Always.
The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
Interesting tale
Interesting tale and humour, but not as deep or thought out as I expected it would be. Didn't enjoy the ending, or the beginning. Light hearted comedy.
(500) Days of Summer (2009)
Good story, not my cup of tea
I'm not particularly a fan of romance films which is why I rated it a 7; however, despite it being a romance film, I thought it was the exact opposite of cliche and expected. Normally you expect romance films to be amazingly romantic; everything works out, it's magical. But this gives you a very realistic depiction of modern relationships, and how not everything goes as you expect it to go.
I enjoyed the ending, I thought it was well thought out. The expectation vs reality scene was amazing and almost made my boyfriend cry for the main character. He thought Summer was bad, which I guess it the main point of this story.
I would recommend, think it's a film that should be watched at least once, but wouldn't rewatch.
Snowpiercer (2013)
Lots of plotholes, unrealistic
Not sure what it was going for. On one hand, the guy's arm freezes off at the beginning (Andy's father?), but on the other, Yona and Timmy are fine when they exit the train. Also there's a polar bear - but wouldn't they have spotted this life on the train before hand? Was there any need to keep being on the train? Or was everyone senselessly evil? - And why was Yona a clairvoyant?? What was the point of that being added to the story?
Why did Gilliam decide to be a spy? He knew he was stuck at the back for life. Why did they choose Curtis to be the successor? Everything seems very convenient. Of course Curtis would be the only one to survive. And if they needed to control the population, if they're willing to kill people, surely a form of birth control would make more sense and be more humane - I mean they have advanced technology - unless they're going for senseless evil again, which is entertaining, I guess, but unrealistic.
The reason why I gave it a positive review overall is because the concept is interesting, and it tries to tell a meaningful story - of poverty, of the unfairness of predestined positions. The cinematography was great, and the depictions of different trains is very interesting; the concept is unique. I also loved the gate opener Kronole addict character; Curtis was also interesting in his moral dilemmas, but at the same time unrelatable in his antagonistic manner.
Overall if you ignore the plotholes and pretend its an alternate universe, it can be an enjoyable film to watch. I would recommend it if you just want to cool down and see some action. Don't think about it too much because while it tries to be "deep" - it is cut off from reality and irrelevant to the modern world!
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Completely Overrated
Senseless storytelling. What was the point? What was the beginning? What was the ending? There wa no time to get to know any of the characters, there was no clear plot point/climax, and I felt pretty disengaged with everyone and everything happening. "It's so meaningful" is what I normally read in the reviews... but how?? Loads of things happen but it ends up feeling like nothing happens.
Boring. You can find better films.
