Last year, Brendan Fraser won Best Actor for “The Whale,” which also won Best Makeup and Hairstyling for artists Adrien Morot, Judy Chin, and Annemarie Bradley. This is a combination of Oscar categories that have popped up several times over the years. But could it happen again this year? Well, theoretically, yes.
The brilliant makeup artist Kazu Hiro, also known as Kazuhiro Tsuji, turned Bradley Cooper into Leonard Bernstein in Netflix’s “Maestro.” Kazu Hiro landed himself an Oscar nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling alongside Kay Georgiou and Lori McCoy-Bell. Meanwhile, Cooper is nominated for Best Actor.
Along with “The Whale,” several other movies have done well with this pair of Oscar categories. In 2018, “Darkest Hour” won Best Actor for Gary Oldman and Hiro won Best Makeup and Hairstyling alongside David Malinowski and Lucy Sibbick. In 2014, “Dallas Buyers Club” won both awards, too, with Matthew McConaughey winning for acting...

Best Actor looks set to be one of the most intriguing Oscar races this year with Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”) and Leonardo DiCaprio (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) currently battling it out at the top of our odds chart in this category.
Colman Domingo (“Rustin”) and Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”) are also predicted to reap nominations but it is Bradley Cooper in third spot that makes things really interesting. Cooper stars as Leonard Bernstein in Netflix’s “Maestro,” which he also produces, directs and co-writes. The Netflix feature, which opens on November 22, explores the complex marriage between the renowned composer and his wife Felicia Montealegre, who is played by Carey Mulligan. Mulligan is, as always, excellent, but Cooper has the transformative role here.
Makeup artist Kazu Hiro, also known as Kazuhiro Tsuji, turns him into Bernstein with astounding makeup and prosthetics. Cooper’s mannerisms, gestures, and vocal work prove add to his performance.

Viewers of the Emmy-nominated Angelyne on Peacock might be surprised to learn just how little of star Emmy Rossum they actually saw. Rossum said during a panel appearance at Deadline’s Contenders Television: The Nominees event that 10 prosthetic pieces transformed her face and body into that of Los Angeles billboard queen Angelyne.
“Nothing of me is me,” Rossum said. “There’s two contact lenses in each eye. There’s a chest piece that wraps around up into the neck and the hairline. Even earlobes, hands — everything is not recognizable [as myself].”
Contenders TV: The Nominees — Deadline’s Complete Coverage
Emmy-nominated makeup department head Kate Biscoe said the prosthetics created a unique paradox. Biscoe normally is tasked with making prosthetic material look like human skin. However, Angelyne herself has altered her body with plastic surgery.

“Every single person she’s come in contact with, she’s left an indelible impression,” claims “Angelyne” makeup artist David Williams. For our recent webchat he adds, “What we want the audience to understand is that impression differs from person to person.” Special makeup effect artist Kate Biscoe explains, “We’re presenting many different versions of the truth. For example, we never see her without makeup. That’s our truth. Even in the bathtub. Because this is a person who has spent her whole existence trying to be in control of her own identity.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.

For Peacock’s limited series Angelyne, looks were everything. Getting the visuals of the Los Angeles legend right was vital for sure, but so was imbuing Emmy Rossum’s portrayal of the mysterious billboard model with a sense of humanity, allowing a real character to move and exist beneath the intense makeup and prosthetics.
“This is obviously a herculean, Everest-style undertaking,” explains Rossum, who in addition to starring serves as an executive producer. “You have to have people of a certain caliber to pull this off. Otherwise, you see a mask and you don’t see a human being.” She articulates that while the show takes inspiration from a real person, it’s an interpretation of reality. “We’re not doing a biopic, we’re telling a story that is about a character. But it’s also a fantasy of everything that she represents.

Beyonce doesn’t like when you mess with her image.
Remember back in 2002 when the world-renown singer starred in Austin Powers In Goldmember as Foxxy Cleopatra? Well in a recent Vulture revisit of the film, it was revealed that Beyonce had to fight to stay true to her and her character’s image. The film’s makeup artist Kate Biscoe stated that the singer mentioned that she looked too skinny on the movie poster.
“She says, ‘You made me too skinny. It’s not me,'” Biscoe said. “Then she did this hourglass shape. And he said, ‘Okay, we’ll fix that.’ She walked away to go do the scene, and I looked at him and smiled, like, ‘Is that the first time that you’ve ever had an actress ask to make her body bigger?’ He was like, ‘Yes. It’s going to cost me thousands of dollars, but...

Vulture marked the 20th anniversary of “Austin Powers in Goldmember” with an oral history devoted to Beyoncé’s role in the blockbuster comedy as Foxxy Cleopatra. One of the biggest revelations comes courtesy of the film’s makeup artist Kate Biscoe, who revealed that Beyoncé called out the marketing team for changing her appearance on one of the movie’s posters. Beyoncé felt the poster made her too skinny, so the marketing team re-did the one-sheet.
“When we were shooting, someone brought her a poster that would be promoting the movie,” Biscoe said. “He showed it to her, like, ‘Do you like it?’ And she was kind of like, ‘Yeah.’ He goes, ‘What’s the matter?’ And she says, ‘You made me too skinny. It’s not me.’ Then she did this hourglass shape. And he said, ‘Okay, we’ll fix that.’”

Beyoncé is just fine being a “whole lot of woman.”
At age 19, the global superstar appeared in Jay Roach’s “Austin Powers in Goldmember” in 2002 as Foxxy Cleopatra, inspired by Pam Grier’s roles in ’70s blaxploitation films. Foxxy was an FBI agent who was previously romantically involved with Austin Powers (Mike Myers) and moonlights as a Studio 69 nightclub singer. The role marked Beyoncé’s first major film debut.
Yet Beyoncé made sure that the marketing materials were up to par for both her image and Foxxy’s.

Beyond scoring big at the box office, breaking streaming viewership records or enchanting critics, several of this summer’s hottest projects have one thing in common: oiled-up, skin-baring scenes.
Top Gun: Maverick took its own approach to the famous beach volleyball scene of the original, staging an oil-heavy game of beach football with Tom Cruise, Miles Teller, Glen Powell and the rest of the pilot team — which Teller’s close friend Shailene Woodley even gushed about on Instagram. Fire Island featured throngs of gay men shimmering in the clubs, while Minx’s cover models got camera ready. Physical and Winning Time took more active, sweaty approaches to their shirtless moments. And just what went into making these half (or in some cases, fully) nude stars glow onscreen? Turns out it’s a lot more than meets the eye.

In an Emmys season of some truly memorable transformations on screen, Emmy Rossum leading the cast of Peacock’s “Angelyne” may be the most mind-boggling.
The legendary billboard queen of Los Angeles is well-known for her larger-than-life appearance, with breasts, hair and makeup that could only be rivaled by a Barbie doll or drag queen. That is, until Rossum stepped into the role.
She sat in the makeup chair for upwards of five hours on some shoot days and embodied the icon over six decades, with each time period requiring a totally different set of accouterments. Those included individual prosthetics on her cheeks, chin, lips, nose, forehead, eyelids, breasts and neck. Even her ear lobes required their own unique pieces. Although it sounds like a lot, prosthetic designer Vincent Van Dyke told Variety he appreciated the challenge of transforming Rossum without it being obvious how much work went into the process.

At the 2018 Oscars, Frances McDormand, who’d just won her second Best Actress Academy Award for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” asked all the female nominees to stand. Ten women will always be nominated by the academy: five for Best Actress and another five for Best Supporting Actress. Besides these other nine women, how many others were on their feet in the Dolby Theater?
Forty-seven women other than actresses were nominated for those 90th Academy Awards. Of these, only four won Oscars. By comparison, 151 men other than actors were nominated and 32 took home statuettes. Of the 20 non-gender specific categories, women were contenders in 17 of them; they were shut out of Original Score (5 men), Sound Editing (9 men) and Visual Effects (20 men).
At last year’s Academy Awards, 53 women other than actresses were nominated as were 159 men. Women make up 25% of the nominees in the non-gender specific categories compared to 23.73% in 2018. Thirteen...

The small Missouri town where most of the action is set “was a bit of a depressing place, a little bit behind the times. Diversity was one of the biggest winners at the Oscars on Sunday, with three out of the four top acting awards won by non-white actors as Regina King, Mahershala Ali and Rami Malek triumphed for their roles in If Beale Street Could Talk, Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody, respectively. In 2015, not a single non-white actor was nominated in the acting categories.
Meanwhile, production designer Hannah Beachler and costume designer Ruth Carter became only the second and third African American women to win non-acting Oscars for their work on Black Panther. Both were also the first black winners ever in their categories.
In a night of many firsts, Peter Ramsey became the first black person to win the award for best animated feature along with his co-directors Bob Persichetti and Rodney Rothman and producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse.

A host-less Oscars was still riveting TV, though not necessarily for reasons producers or broadcast network ABC might have hoped. And, if you thought losing host Kevin Hart over homophobic tweets from his past would be Oscars biggest controversy this year, you thought wrong.
Here are the best and worst moments from the 2019 Freestyle Oscars:
Word Salad Posing As Acceptance Speech
The three winners for best hair and makeup for Vice – Greg Cannom, Kate Biscoe and Patricia DeHaney – tried reading their acceptance thank yous off of one piece of paper but appeared not to have agreed who would say what, creating massive on-stage confusion. First hint of trouble: when Cannom turned to his fellow winners and said “oh, you’re here?” The Oscarcast director eventually put viewers out of their misery, first playing music over the winners, then cutting the mic, then dimming the lights on stage.

It was a crafts celebration at the 91st Academy Awards Sunday night, marked by the wonders of “Black Panther’s” Wakanda and “Bohemian Rhapsody’s” nostalgic rock trip.
“Black Panther” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” shared the night with three craft Oscars apiece. The McU struck Oscar gold for the first time with its superhero phenomenon, taking production design (designer Hannah Beachler and art director Jay Hart ), costume design (designer Ruth Carter), and score (composer Ludwig Göransson).
And the popular Freddie Mercury biopic (starring Oscar winner Rami Malek) offered a powerful, arena-like cinematic experience, snagging awards for editor John Ottman (going without a director in post-production) in tandem with the sound editing and mixing teams.
But for Beachler and Carter (previously nominated for “Amistad” and “Malcolm X”), it was a significant diversity breakthrough, as they became the first blacks to win in their respective crafts. They helped director Ryan Coogler achieve his...

At this year’s Academy Awards, 15 women won while 36 men (some multiple times) made their way to the stage of the Dolby Theater (these figures include the two men and two women are always guaranteed to win the acting awards). That marks a big increase from last year when the gender gap saw just 6 women winners versus 34 men. Scroll down to see the names of the 13 women who won at the 2019 Oscars besides actresses Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”) and Regina King (“If Beale Street Could Talk”).
This year, 53 women other than actresses were nominated at the 91st Academy Awards. With 159 men in contention, this meant that women make up 25% of the nominees in the non-gender specific categories (there will always be 10 women and 10 men nominated for the acting awards). At last year’s Oscars women represented 23.73% of the nominees in the 20 non-gender specific categories. Forty-seven women numbered among the contenders in those 17 races.

Oscar Sunday marked a night of important firsts — and seconds — for diverse artists and filmmakers and their Hollywood contributions.
The 2019 telecast started making history almost immediately. After Regina King accepted best supporting actress for “If Beale Street Could Talk,” Ruth E. Carter became the first African American woman to ever win best costume design, for her work on Marvel’s “Black Panther.”
“I dreamed of this night and I prayed for this night honestly…what it would mean not just for me but for young people coming behind me,” Carter told press backstage at Hollywood’s Dolby Theater. A nod to a new generation of costumers could have been expected, as the first person Carter thanked in her acceptance speech was Spike Lee. The director gave her her start, she said, and he was himself a multiple nominee on Sunday for “BlacKkKlansman.”
“I hope through my example this means there is hope.

In the end, Oscar watchers and industry members all seemed relieved that all the categories were handed out on air, reversing the Academy’s original plan to present some categories during commercials.
Recipients of the Academy Awards for cinematography, editing, make-up and hairstyling, and live-action shorts all got their time in the spotlight on Sunday night’s Oscar broadcast.
Alfonso Cuaron won for cinematography for “Roma”; John Ottman won editing for “Bohemian Rhapsody”; “Skin,” directed by Guy Nattiv, won for live action short and Greg Cannom, Kate Biscoe and Patricia Dehaney took the make-up and hairstyling trophy for “Vice,” only to be played off the stage when their speech went on too long.
Those four awards categories were left in Oscar limbo when on Feb. 11, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the decision to curtail four Oscar presentations from the live telecast. The goal — keep the broadcast...

Women roared at the 91st Academy Awards on Sunday, picking up a record 15 trophies — the most in Oscar history. With 39 male winners this year, that means women earned nearly 27.8 percent of the statuettes handed out.
The previous record came in both 2007 and 2015, when women earned a total of 12 statuettes, including for the two actress categories.
And it comes after just six women earned Oscars at last year’s ceremony, compared with 33 male winners. That’s little more than 15 percent. It was the lowest number of female winners since 2012’s show (the 85th annual Academy Awards), when only four women brought home statuettes.

Turns out, preparation is not always key — at least not when it comes to Oscars speeches.
Twitter immediately reacted after the winners of the Best Hair and Makeup category stumbled through their acceptance speech at the 2019 Oscars ceremony on Sunday night.
When Greg Cannom, Kate Biscoe, Patricia Dehaney-Le May took the stage to accept the award for their work on the film Vice, they attempted to share speech duties by taking turns reading off a sheet of paper.
But within seconds, the group lost track of who was supposed to be reading, leading to a rather awkward acceptance speech.

Hail to the almost chief. Vice, the film that transformed Christian Bale into various incarnations of George W. Bush’s former Veep Dick Cheney, scored the Oscar tonight for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. It’s the fourth Academy Award for makeup designer Greg Cannom and the first for his fellow Vice winners Kate Biscoe and Patricia DeHaney, both of whom were first-time nominees.
Read a transcript of their acceptance speech below.
The Annapurna Pictures film depicts Cheney in many iterations spanning a half-century, and Cannom said he was given free rein by writer-director Adam McKay, saying he was the best collaborator he could have asked for. “One day I was on set in the beginning,” the Oscar winner told Deadline in a recent interview,” and he walked in, and was just like, ‘How do you do this, Cannom? Are you a witch?’”

The 91st Annual Academy Awards are finally here, and who knows how they’re going to play out? Ironically like many of the films it’ll be honoring, the yearlong buildup and campaign for the event has been plagued by backstage controversies – with the hiring and prompt resignation of would-be Mc Kevin Hart to the debacles concerning its runtime, it looks like the host-less Oscars won’t be giving out jet skis for shortest acceptance speech this year.
With that in mind, the purpose of the Academy Awards is to celebrate 2018’s greatest movies; and following the trend of the show’s last several seasons, this year’s nominees are in themselves historic, not only for their diversity, but also for the genres and studios that they represent.
Roma, director Alfonso Cuarón’s heavy contender, racked in 10 nominations, tied for most of the night with The Favourite, as well as most ever with Crouching Tiger,...

Nasal plugs, K-y Jelly, yellowing dental veneers - the key items scattered on set of the Academy Award-nominated film Vice sound more like what you'd find in a nursing home medicine cabinet than beauty products. And yet, these are just a few of many things the movie's makeup team used to transform a star-studded cast into rising politicians.
More specifically, Christian Bale looked nearly unrecognizable as former VP Dick Cheney, as did Amy Adams as his public image-minded wife Lynne, Sam Rockwell as George W. “Vice,” the Oscar frontrunner for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, got a big boost at Saturday’s Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards. It won both of its bids for period/character makeup and special makeup effects. Its Oscar rival “Mary Queen of Scots” lost the race for period/character makeup but won for period/character hairstyling. Awards season has moved across the pond with this year’s BAFTA Awards in London.
Legendary British actress Joanna Lumley is returning to host Sunday’s awards show in London’s Royal Albert Hall, which is set to honor a wide swath of popular films, including frontrunner “The Favourite.”
With 12 nominations, the Yorgo Lanthimos film has greatly outpaced the rest of this year’s pack, including “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “First Man,” “Roma,” and “A Star Is Born,” which only garnered seven BAFTA nominations apiece. Also nominated are “Vice,” which scored six nominations, “BlacKkKlansman” with five, and “Cold War” and “Green Book” with four each.
Nominated in this year’s leading actor category are Christian Bale for “Vice,” Steve Coogan for “Stan & Ollie,” Rami Malek for “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Viggo Mortensen for “Green Book,” and Bradley Cooper for “A Star Is Born.” Cooper is also nominated in this year’s all-male director category,...

Thanks to makeup guru Greg Cannom, Christian Bale became totally unrecognizable as political lightning rod and VP Dick Cheney in “Vice.” It was a dramatic transformation (from age 21 to 75) that has Cannom poised for his fourth Oscar win.
And nobody was more stunned than Cannom (he collaborated with Kate Biscoe and Patricia Dehaney). “When I first heard that they wanted Christian Bale to be Cheney, I thought they must be kidding,” he said. But there was no other choice for writer-director Adam McKay. Not after he was blown away by Bale’s scene-stealing performance as the eccentric hedge fund genius in “The Big Short.”
“It was amazing how well the old Cheney worked,” Cannom said. “I never thought it would ever get that good. But when the trailer came out, people said, ‘Who is that?'”
And the experience was a revelation for the chameleon-like Bale, who had never worn prosthetics before.

At last year’s Oscars women represented 23.73% of the nominees in the 20 non-gender specific categories. Forty-seven women numbered among the contenders in 17 races. They were shut out of Original Score (5 men), Sound Editing (9 men) and Visual Effects (20 men). By comparison, 151 men other than actors were nominated. Four women won Oscars as did 32 men.
This year, 53 women other than actresses are nominated at the 91st Academy Awards. With 159 men in contention, this means that women make up 25% of the nominees in the non-gender specific categories. This uptick came despite women being shut out of five races this year.
Besides score (5 men again) and visual effects (20 men again), women are not represented in Best Director (5 men), Cinematography (5 men) and Film Editing (5 men).
This year, one category — Costume Design — is guaranteed to have a woman win as they make up the entire slate. Women outnumber men in three categories — Makeup and Hairstyling, Documentary...

Adam McKay’s “Vice” could well follow in the Oscar footsteps of Joe Wright’s “Darkest Hour.” Both biopics portray portly, balding man with supreme power and authority – Dick Cheney and Winston Churchill, respectively. Each showcases a transformative performance by a respected actor.
In “Darkest Hour,” Gary Oldman embodied the British statesman. He won Best Actor pretty much everywhere, including at the Academy Awards. In “Vice,” his “Dark Knight” co-star Christian Bale is the essence of the American vice president: a scarier figure altogether, like a looming great white shark. Unlike Oldman, Bale didn’t start off the awards season as the favorite in the Oscar race. However, his wins at the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards have turned him into the Best Actor frontrunner.
Both actors credit their respective hair and make-up teams for transforming them into their characters. The legendary Kazuhiro Tsuji, who Oldman coaxed out of...
