Adnan Virk, a Canadian sports broadcaster whose nine-year run at ESPN ended abruptly in 2019, is reuniting with ex-colleagues Dan Le Batard and John Skipper at Meadowlark Media.
The emerging content company, which launched in January, will add Virk as a regular contributor starting in July. Le Batard was a popular host of Highly Questionable and Skipper had a nearly three-decade tenure at ESPN, including six years as president.
ESPN fired Virk, who had been on the rise at the network, in 2019. Reports at the time indicated that he had been accused of leaking confidential information to the media on more than one occasion. Virk denied the charges and later agreed with ESPN that both parties would abandon plans to sue each other in order for Virk to be let out of his contract.

Dazn, the rising sports streaming operation headed by former ESPN chief John Skipper, has added a key exec from Skipper’s former regime, bringing in Jamie Horowitz as Evp of content for North America.
Horowitz had been a consultant at Dazn since 2018. He was fired by Fox Sports in 2017 amid an investigation by the company of accusations of sexual harassment. Through his attorney, Horowitz asserted his innocence and the company never disclosed the reason for his dismissal. In 2014, he was ousted by NBC after a tumultous 10-week stint overseeing Today that came soon after the end of the morning show’s decade-plus advantage over rival Good Morning America in the ratings.
As Dazn pumps more money into filling out its programming lineup beyond live rights to soccer, boxing, Mma and other sports, it will look to Horowitz to replicate his successful development of shows like ESPN’s daily debate staple First Take.

Jamie Horowitz is joining Dazn, the sports subscription service primarily focused on boxing and Mma, as executive vice president of content in North America, according to a company memo shared on Friday morning.
Horowitz will report directly to chairman John Skipper. The two previously worked together at ESPN, where Horowitz crafted several shows, including “First Take,” while Skipper was president. Horowitz later moved on to Fox Sports, where he served as president of FS1 from 2015 to 2017 before being fired after the network opened an investigation into claims of sexual harassment. Horowitz, through his attorney, denied any misconduct.
In his memo to staff on Friday, Skipper said that Horowitz will oversee original programming, live production and social media as part of his role. Horowitz joins Dazn as it prepares to invest about $12 million into original content.

Because of specific guild guidelines, Oscar front-runner “The Favourite” was ineligible for Best Original Screenplay at the Writers Guild Awards, so what will win in its place when the WGA hands out its prizes on February 17? According to the combined predictions of more than 1,000 Gold Derby users, the industry’s writers will be seeing “Green.”
“Green Book” leads our predictions with odds of 10/3. That includes support from four of the Expert journalists we’ve polled from top media outlets: Edward Douglas (Weekend Warrior), Tariq Khan (Fox TV), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone) and Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby). That makes sense given the industry’s admiration for the period film. It won the Producers Guild Award in January, and its screenplay also prevailed at the Golden Globes — though those prizes aren’t handed out by industry peers.

“Can You Ever Forgive Me?” scene-stealer Richard E. Grant has been a favorite of critics for his role as a down-on-his-luck grifter, but in January Mahershala Ali (“Green Book”) started building what may be unstoppable momentum in the Best Supporting Actor race, winning the Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice Award and SAG Award for his performance as a pianist facing racism in the Jim Crow South. Dua Lipa was our Grammy front-runner for Best New Artist before the nominations were announced, but then R&B breakout H.E.R. came out of nowhere with an Album of the Year bid for her self-titled compilation, so now she has moved out front in our New Artist forecasts. Can Dua Lipa overcome that deficit? She’s still the biggest hit-maker in the category, and voters often favor commercial success.
Dua Lipa only has two nominations this year, compared to five for H.E.R. In addition to Best New Artist, Lipa is up for Best Dance Recording for “Electricity” with Silk City, Diplo and Mark Ronson. That doesn’t seem like a lot of broad support from the recording academy, but it’s possible she would have done even better if her biggest hit had been eligible for consideration.

One of the biggest surprises on Oscar nominations morning was the snub of “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” from Best Documentary Feature. But that doesn’t seem to indicate a lack of support from the industry. The film actually won Best Documentary at the Producers Guild Awards, and now we think director Morgan Neville will be avenged at the Directors Guild Awards.
“Neighbor” is a biographical film about the life and career of children’s television host Fred Rogers, placing his work in the larger context of children’s education and cultural change through the second half of the 20th century. It was a box office blockbuster by documentary standards, grossing $22 million. And it was admired by critics, scoring 85 on MetaCritic and winning top honors at the Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards.

Over 3,100 people worldwide predicted these champs in all six movie categories chosen by voters from the Screen Actors Guild. Past winner Megan Mullally (“Will and Grace”) hosted the ceremony from downtown Los Angeles on TNT and TBS. Our top scorer had five of the categories correct, only missing Emily Blunt of “A Quiet Place” (supporting actress). That means she got such tough ones as “Black Panther” (ensemble) and Rami Malek of “Bohemian Rhapsody” (actor).

The Oscar for Best Original Song looks like it might be a cakewalk for Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper‘s “Shallow” from “A Star is Born.” But they face a tougher challenge in the Grammy race for Record of the Year, and as of this writing it’s too close to call. “Shallow” is tied with Childish Gambino‘s “This is America” with leading odds of 9/2. So who really has the lead? Well, it depends on who you ask.
The Expert journalists we’ve polled give the slight advantage to “Shallow.” Three of them are backing the movie tune: Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Lyndsey Parker (Yahoo Music) and Adnan Virk (ESPN). The other two are forecasting “This is America”: Bonnie Fuller (Hollywood Life) and Glenn Gamboa (Newsday).

With the Critics’ Choice Awards just hours away on Sunday January 13, our 30 Oscar experts from major media outlets are hoping to get guidance from these key precursor prizes as to what will win Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Their votes remain split between four films, with two of these far out front of the other two.
Since being all but shut out of the Golden Globes, “A Star is Born” has seen its lead over “Roma” in the Best Picture race at the Oscars shrink. It now leads our experts tally by a vote of 16 to 10. Three of our experts are holding out hope for “Green Book,” which won Best Comedy/Musical at the Globes while one is backing “BlacKkKlansman.” [See the most up-to-date Best Picture rankings by our 30 Experts.]
Although “A Star is Born” enjoys a clear majority of first-place votes from the experts, it is not that far ahead of “Roma” and “Green Book” on our Best Picture odds chart.

Someone, I think it was a guy named Tom O’Neil, once told me that when it comes to predicting the Oscar tech categories, always go with whatever has the most. The most special effects, the most music, the most editing, the most sound, the most costumes and especially the most makeup and hair. That is how something like 2016’s unloved “Suicide Squad” came to earn a statuette for that last category.
But voting members of the Critics’ Choice Awards — myself being one — aren’t the academy, and perhaps we have more refined tastes when it comes to putty noses, fake scars and towering wigs. All I know is that I gasped when I first caught a glimpse of a chubby Christian Bale with sparse white hair and pot belly as Dick Cheney when “Vice’s” first trailer premiered last fall. I also laughed at how Sam Rockwell nailed it with his Dubya nose.

While Disney and Pixar ‘toons have claimed six out of the past eight wins for Best Animated Feature, Sony’s visually innovative “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” has the best odds to swing its way to a Critics’ Choice award on Sunday night. The Marvel superhero adventure has 9/2 odds in our predictions.
All Eight Experts participating — Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Susan King (Gold Derby), Tariq Khan (Fox TV), Edward Douglas (Weekend Warrior), Anne Thompson (Indiewire), Adnan Virk (ESPN), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone) and myself — and six Editors and 16 Top 24 Users are backing “Spider-Verse,” which already has a Golden Globe.

“Roma,” Alfonso Cuaron‘s visual love song to his childhood caretaker while growing up in ’70s Mexico City, could make history if it becomes the first Critics’ Choice winner in 24 years to claim trophies for Best Foreign Film as well as Best Picture. That’s based on the overwhelming odds for its success in those categories.
While the black-and-white Netflix release couldn’t compete for best drama picture at the Golden Globes since the pool is limited to films in English, it did pick up a gold knick-knack in the foreign-language category and for best director. Right now, before voting begins on Thursday, “Roma” is the clear front-runner among its non-English competition with 39/10 odds. The only rival that comes close is “Cold War,” Poland’s official entry at the Oscars, about a music director and a singer who engage in a torrid affair that starts after World War II and carries on through the years.

For most of the season “Incredibles 2” has been the front-runner to win the Best Animated Feature Oscar in our racetrack odds, and it still is overall, but our Experts have had a change of heart. For a while there it looked like Regina King might stroll across the Oscars finish line uncontested for her supporting role in “If Beale Street Could Talk,” especially after she swept the early critics’ awards. Olivia Colman has regained her lead over Emily Blunt in the race for Best Comedy/Musical Actress at the Golden Globes just in time, with final voting ending on Wednesday (Jan. 2). Our experts are predicting that the star of “The Favourite” will win on Sunday over, among others, Blunt who headlines the blockbuster “Mary Poppins Returns.”
Colman prevailed with her only previous Golden Globe bid two years ago for “The Night Manager.” That win came in the catch-all supporting performance category over on the TV side. Blunt took home that same trophy in 2007 for the telefilm “Gideon’s Daughter.” Since then she has contended for her leading film roles in the 2009 drama “The Young Victoria,” the 2012 comedy “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen” and the 2014 musical “Into the Woods.”

The Golden Globe categories for TV supporting actors are often tough to call since they combine everything: comedies, dramas, movies and limited series. But this year’s battle is so close that it’s virtually tied in our predictions: Henry Winkler (“Barry“) and Ben Whishaw (“A Very English Scandal“) both get leading odds of 71/20 as of this writing. But those predictions vary wildly from one predictions group to another.
According to the Expert journalists we’ve polled from top media outlets, Winkler is slightly out front. Seven of them are predicting him to prevail for his role as an acting coach to a conflicted hitman: Eric Deggans (NPR), Bonnie Fuller (Hollywood Life), Wilson Morales (BlackFilm), Nikki Novak (Fandango), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone), Ken Tucker (Yahoo) and Adnan Virk (ESPN).

Tracking the Best Picture race is the toughest part. “‘Roma’ is incredible and it’s beautifully shot, but a subtitled film has never won Best Picture and it’s in black and and there’s some backlash against Netflix,” he says. “It has all of these issues.
“‘A Star Is Born’ — It’s a huge commercial success. It really came from Bradley Cooper‘s heart. I think he has an excellent shot to win Best Actor. Lady Gaga could win Best Actress. But do you really think that a film that is a remake for the fourth time is going to win a Best Picture? Is that what we’re looking at here?...

Lady Gaga has been greeted like Hollywood royalty in her first leading role on the big screen, “A Star is Born.” But she’s not the only Queen competing for kudos this season. The Freddie Mercury biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” is also in the running for awards. It would be Oscar kismet if both make the cut because the band was actually the inspiration for Lady Gaga’s name.
“I adored Freddie Mercury and Queen had a hit called ‘Radio Ga Ga.’ That’s why I love the name,” said Lady Gaga about her moniker back in 2009. The artist formerly known as Stefani Germanotta added, “He was not only a singer but also a fantastic performer, a man of the theater and someone who constantly transformed himself. In short: a genius.” So will she and her namesake both be rewarded on Oscar night?

What a difference a couple of weeks makes. Ethan Hawke (“First Reformed”) looked like a dark horse Oscar contender for his role as a tormented pastor, but the indie film was released way back in May, so it was at risk of getting lost in the shuffle. However, strong showings at the Independent Spirit Awards and Gotham Awards in recent weeks have given him a dramatic boost. Now he’s officially in our top-five for Best Actor based on the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users.
Hawke now ranks fifth with odds of 23/2. He still trails front-runner Bradley Cooper (“A Star is Born”), as well as Christian Bale (“Vice”), Viggo Mortensen (“Green Book”) and Rami Malek (“Bohemian Rhapsody”), but he has just managed to climb over Ryan Gosling (“First Man”). Gosling was an early front-runner since he’s a past nominee playing a real-life hero (astronaut Neil Armstrong...

Sixteen of our 18 Golden Globe experts from major media outlets are predicting that the Oscar frontrunner, “A Star is Born,” will win Best Drama at these precursor prizes. One is backing “BlacKKKlansman” while another favors “First Man.”
Bradley Cooper‘s remake of “A Star is Born” debuted at the Venice film festival as did Damien Chazelle‘s “First Man.” Spike Lee‘s”BlacKKKlansman” premiered at Cannes and was a big hit this summer.
Of the 65 winners of Best Drama at the Golden Globes, just under half (32) went on to take home the top prize at the Oscars. However, since the academy expanded the Best Picture race in 2009, only four of the nine winners of that award had previously prevailed on the drama side at the Golden Globes. Last year “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” won at the Globes over, among others, the eventual Oscar pick “The Shape of Water.” In...

“First Reformed” got some of the year’s best reviews, so can Paul Schrader finally earn his first ever Oscar nomination? Yes, you read that right: the screenwriter of “Taxi Driver” (1976) and “Raging Bull” (1980), and the director of “Hardcore” (1979), “American Gigolo” (1980), and “Affliction” (1997), to name a few, has never competed at the Academy Awards. While much of the buzz for this A24 release has been for Ethan Hawke‘s performance as a tormented priest confronting the effects of climate change, the academy writers branch especially could take this as an opportunity to right a tremendous wrong.
Schrader earned Golden Globe bids for penning Martin Scorsese‘s “Taxi Driver” and “Raging Bull,” with the former also bringing him a WGA bid. But somehow neither of those led to Oscar nominations, despite both films competing for Best Picture. And Schrader has likewise been snubbed for his directorial efforts.

In the seven years since the academy went to a variable number of Best Picture nominees, the winner of the top prize has not also claimed Best Director four times. And according to the predictions of our Oscar experts, this scenario is likely to play out again this year with Bradley Cooper‘s remake of “A Star is Born” winning Best Picture but Alfonso Cuaron picking up his second Best Director Oscar for “Roma.”
Of our 29 Oscarologists, a whopping 25 of them are forecasting that Cuaron will win a bookend (but only three say his film will also prevail). That support gives him leading odds of 82/25. Four experts are backing Cooper (compare that to the 19 predicting that “A Star is Born” will win Best Picture), which translates to odds of 9/2. [See the most up-to-date Best Director rankings by our 29 Experts.]

“Everything is Love” had topped our Grammy predictions for Album of the Year since our predictions center opened earlier this year. The collaboration between Beyonce and Jay-z — credited as The Carters — follows up Beyonce’s “Lemonade” and Jay-z’s “4:44,” which explored their marital discord after Jay-z’s infidelity. Both of those were nominated for Album of the Year, but lost. And for Beyonce it was her third defeat. So she has a big Grammy Iou, but she may be denied yet again. Janelle Monae‘s “Dirty Computer” has climbed to first place in our odds.
As of this writing Monae gets leading odds of 11/2, thanks in part to support from two of the Expert journalists we’ve polled: Lyndsey Parker (Yahoo Music) and Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby). She’s also backed by two Editors who cover awards year-round for Gold Derby, two of the Top 24 Users who got...
