This article contains major spoilers for "Challengers."
Given our Puritanical origins, Americans tend to have a strange relationship with the concept of kink. It's only within the last half-century or so that popular culture has allowed for the exploration and broadcast of what used to be taboo topics: Things as basic and human as the general act of sex, the proliferation of violence, and so on. Prior to that watershed time in American history, so much of life was hidden behind closed doors, causing the general public persona of the average citizen to be repressed or sublimated.
While America is certainly not alone when it comes to rabidly enjoying sports — whether participating directly or merely observing them being played — it feels like our culture uses the pastimes as one of several outlets with which to get in touch with our baser, more primal selves. If football is a stand-in for...

While some may contest whether his new film – Challengers – is, in fact, director Luca Guadagnino’s best film, it is undeniable that this is, simply put, a great film.
In Challengers stars Zendaya as a former tennis prodigy named Tashi Duncan who, after a brutal injury ends her career, turns to coaching and while serving as such for her husband – Art Donaldson (Mike Faist), himself a tennis champion, though currently besought by a losing streak – orchestrates a final confrontation between Art and his former friend and rival for Tashi’s affections, Patrick Zweig (Josh O’Connor). As the two old friends face each other in the most important match of their lives, their troubled relationship plays out as flashbacks between sets.
Director Luca Guadagnino – perhaps previously best known Suspiria (2019) and Call Me by Your Name (2017) – proves a formidable directorial force with his command of the material here. There is never a...

Who says this summer is light on blockbuster fare, despite the strikes holding productions and release dates up?
Big movies coming to theaters in the next hot few months include favorite IP getting a 2024 burnish, from “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” to “Alien: Romulus” and “Twisters”. Oh, and a little movie called “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” (May 24), which George Miller will first bring to the Cannes Film Festival before opening it in theaters later that month. Plus, poised to be a Netflix hit this summer is Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man” (May 24 in theaters), playing for a couple of weeks in select cities before the crime comedy starring Glen Powell hits the streaming platform.
But those bigger-ticket titles aside, summer 2024 is a time for indies to shine, from Annie Baker’s long-awaited festival hit “Janet Planet” (June 14) to India Donaldson’s wonderful Sundance premiere “Good One” (August...

MrBeast has brought his brand into another video game. The YouTube star’s latest partnership is a deal with Zynga‘s Socialpoint studio centered around the mobile game Top Troops.
Top Troops is a strategy game launched last year by Socialpoint, the studio acquired by Take-Two in 2017. (Take-Two became Zynga’s parent company after closing a $12.7 billion deal in 2022.) Top Troops players who download the game on either iOS or Android devices can now take part in the MrBeast Battle Challenge, which was designed in tandem with the titular creator (whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson.)
The MrBeast Battle Challenge is a 14-day gauntlet filled with challenges that look like they came out of a MrBeast video. The creation of “MrBeast-themed obstacles” is nothing new for North Carolina-based Donaldson. Last year, he jumped into another casual game when he designed levels and characters for Scopely’s Stumble Guys.

The race to become the most-subscribed channel on YouTube is heating up, and the channel that currently holds that title is rallying its base in an attempt to stay on top. T-Series uploaded a video urging its fans to “unite together” as MrBeast moves within 11 million subscribers of the record label’s YouTube-leading mark.
On April 15, a new video on the T-Series channel prompted viewers to subscribe and “embark on this journey as one united family.” The clip also featured a message attributed to late T-Series founder Gulshan Kumar: The quote expresses Kumar’s desire to “put India and my people at top of the international platform.”

This is no ordinary call for subscribers. T-Series is currently YouTube’s most-subscribed channel; its 261 million fans tune in to watch music videos and film clips. T-Series took YouTube’s subscriber crown in 2019 after a dramatic,...

Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers opens in an intentionally disorienting manner: We are in New Rochelle, New York for a tennis challenger. Wearing cheap shorts that resemble boxers, Patrick Zweig (Josh O’Connor) battles Art Donaldson (Mike Faist), clad in head-to-toe Uniqlo, while the glamorous Tashi Donaldson (Zendaya) watches tensely from the stands. Flashbacks, first from a few days prior, and then way back to 13 years ago, slowly fill in the gaps on how these two former best friends ended up in such a position: playing against one another in a mid-tier tennis challenger comically sponsored by a tire brand.
Even as Challengers zips back and forth in time with boundless energy, the narrative, to Guadagnino and screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes’ credit, is never hard to follow. Sometimes the foreknowledge afforded by time jumps end up sacrificing drama, but in Challengers this sacrifice makes space for us to feel the burden of these broken relationships.

Jimmy Donaldson is getting more shine from traditional media. Nearly two years after he graced the cover of Rolling Stone‘s first Creator Issue, the man known as MrBeast has hit the front page of another magazine: Time. The 101-year-old news publication featured Donaldson in a story about his “swift rise” on YouTube and his status as “the most-watched person in the world.”
The 4,500-word profile of Donaldson includes all of the typical talking points that come up in long-form explorations of the MrBeast empire. Time traced the creator’s roots in North Carolina, chronicled his upending of the YouTube ecosystem, and details his struggles to maintain profitability in an ever-changing industry.
Donaldson told Time that he envisions a future in which he won’t have to rely on sponsors the way he does now. “I know a video is gonna get 200 million views,” he said. “And I sell that video to a different company,...

One of the critically best-ranked films (according to Indiewire’s Critics Poll – and our publication) to break out of this year’s Sundance becomes the maiden voyage debut film for a distrib we are excited about in Metrograph Pictures (we are expecting close to a dozen releases). Variety reports that India Donaldson’s Good One — what we could call a coming-of-ager dramedy will be launched this summer. As this will be seen as Reichardt-ian type cinema, further film festival play is expected with a major European premiere as a big possibility.

Metrograph Pictures has acquired North American rights to “Good One,” one of the breakouts of the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. The indie film had its world premiere in the U.S. Narrative Competition section. It’s the feature debut of writer and director India Donaldson, and stars newcomer Lily Collias, whose performance captivated critics, alongside James Le Gros (“Showing Up”) and Danny McCarthy.
This marks the first title acquired by Metrograph Pictures, which recently expanded into releasing films theatrically under the leadership of David Laub, a former A24 executive who now heads distribution for the new studio growing out of Metrograph’s New York theater. The film will receive a national theatrical release in summer 2024.
“We are extremely proud to have the opportunity to release India Donaldson’s wonderful Sundance breakout as our first acquisition under David’s new leadership of Metrograph Pictures,” Christian Grass, CEO of Metrograph, said in a statement.

YouTube’s top trend of the year features long-necked heads that pop out of toilets. That’s the best description I can offer for Skibidi Toilet, which headlined 2023’s “Year On YouTube” recap.
Skibidi Toilet took YouTube and TikTok by storm over the summer, pulling in billions of views in the process. “2023’s Trending Topics in the US reflect fandom’s increasingly important role in transforming cultural moments into fully immersive phenomena that play out across Shorts, longform, livestreams, and podcasts,” reads YouTube’s recap. “From original series like Skibidi Toilet to the release of Barbie, fans came to YouTube to put their personal spins on memes, movies, and more.”

On TikTok, some viewers recently saw an ad in which MrBeast offered a deal that seemed too good to be true. It was.
In the spot, MrBeast (whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson) promised to give away 10,000 iPhone 15 Pro devices for just $2 apiece. But days after the promotion went live, the real Jimmy Donaldson took to X to tell viewers that he did not film the ad himself. The character seen in the video was nothing more than an AI-generated deepfake designed to resemble the 25-year-old creator.
“Lots of people are getting this deepfake scam ad of me…are social media platforms ready to handle the rise of AI deepfakes?” Donaldson wrote. “This is a serious problem.”

San Francisco, Aug 8 (Ians) The ghost kitchen company that operates MrBeast Burger — a virtual restaurant chain — is counter-suing YouTuber Jimmy Donaldson (aka MrBeast) for over $100 million. This comes a week after Donaldson sued the virtual burger restaurant.
The YouTuber and his Beast Investments are being sued by Virtual Dining Concepts and Celebrity Virtual Dining (Vdc) for breach of contract and intentional tortious interference. The claimed damages are over $100 million, reports Variety.

The lawsuit claimed that Donaldson’s violations of the parties’ contracts and meddling in business dealings have harmed MrBeast Burger and Vdc’s reputations, turned away customers, and also strained relationships with suppliers and vendors,...

Jimmy Donaldson, better known as MrBeast, and the ghost kitchen company behind his virtual burger restaurant chain are trading barbs in a legal battle that will decide the fate of whether MrBeast Burger operates under the YouTube megastar’s brand.
In a suit filed on Monday in New York state court, Virtual Dining Concepts claims Donaldson breached his contract by publicly criticizing the chain and failing to follow through on a series of alleged commitments to grow the business. It says the YouTuber is looking to “torpedo the brand” after his attempts to seize total control of the venture were rebuffed. “Donaldson’s baseless and unlawful disparagement had the intended effect: MrBeast Burger’s reputation was materially damaged if not destroyed, customers abandoned the Brand, and Plaintiffs’ hard-won relationships with vendors, partners, and suppliers were shattered, causing damages to Plaintiffs that, according to the evidence and Donaldson’s own statements...

San Francisco, Aug 1 (Ians) Popular YouTuber Jimmy Donaldson aka MrBeast is suing the company responsible for his branded line of fast food including the MrBeast Burger, due to delivering “inedible” food to customers.
In 2020, Virtual Dining Concepts partnered with MrBeast to launch the menu out of “ghost kitchens”, or storefronts without a physical presence where food is prepared and served from other restaurants, reports The Verge.
Donaldson’s lawsuit claimed that Virtual Dining Concepts neglected quality control in favour of expanding its line of MrBeast food and that the food was consistently bad enough to damage his reputation.
Among other unfavourable remarks cited in the lawsuit, MrBeast fans called the food “revolting” and “likely the worst burger (they) have ever had”.
The news was first reported by Bloomberg.
“As a result, MrBeast Burger has been regarded as a misleading, poor reflection of the MrBeast brand that provides low-quality products to customers that are delivered late,...

Paul McCartney and John Lennon often collaborated on early drafts of Beatles songs. One would bring the song to the other, and they were often brutally honest about changes that needed to be made or if it was just plain bad. McCartney brought an unfinished draft of “Drive My Car” to Lennon, but the pair decided to change it with a different title.

As he expands his Feastables brand beyond candy bars, Jimmy Donaldson is working with one of his long-time collaborators. The man known as MrBeast has introduced Karl’s Gummies, a sweet treat that features Karl Jacobs‘ face on its packaging.

One year after putting MrBeast on the cover of its inaugural Creator Issue, Rolling Stone has given Emma Chamberlain her close-up. Chamberlain is the star of the second-annual Creator Issue, which arrived on April 18.
Rolling Stone profiled Chamberlain for a Creator Issue cover story that tracks the winding career path the erstwhile teen vlogger has taken. The piece characterizes Chamberlain — who now hosts the podcast Anything Goes and releases easygoing travel vlogs on her YouTube channel — as an unpredictable figure who is willing to go off-script in search of artistic fulfillment. “They gave me a script, but I don’t do scripts,” Chamberlain said before presenting at an event hosted by Spotify. “I do so much better off the cuff.”
Just as MrBeast (real name Jimmy Donaldson) was the perfect choice for the first Creator Issue cover story, Chamberlain is the right person to take Rolling Stone‘s annual tradition into its second year.

Ted Donaldson, who starred as Bud Anderson on the original radio version of Father Knows Best and as Neely Nolan in the beloved family drama A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, the first feature directed by Elia Kazan, has died. He was 89.
Donaldson died Wednesday of complications from a fall in his Echo Park apartment in January, his friend Thomas Bruno told The Hollywood Reporter.
In his big-screen debut, Donaldson portrayed a boy who gets his pet caterpillar Curly to dance when he plays “Yes Sir, That’s My Baby” on the harmonica in the comedy fantasy Once Upon a Time (1944), starring Cary Grant and Janet Blair.
He also starred as Danny Mitchell in eight B-movies from Columbia Pictures that revolved around a German shepherd named Rusty. The first one, Adventures of Rusty (1945), featured Ace the Wonder Dog.

Before Frank Capra directed the 1946 classic, It’s a Wonderful Life, he made 1934’s It Happened One Night. It’s a romantic comedy that made Hollywood history as the first movie to perform a “clean sweep” at the Oscars‘ top five categories – Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Director, and Best Writing, Adaptation. Here’s why the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences made the right choice.

The rom-com genre goes all the way back to the days of William Shakespeare, which continues to find its way into contemporary takes on the genre. His plays inspired movies such as 2002’s 10 Things I Hate About You, 2006’s She’s the Man, and 2013’s Warm Bodies.

YouTube is rolling out a feature that will allow creators to dub their videos in multiple languages, streamlining the process for those seeking to reach audiences in their native languages around the globe.
Eligible creators will receive an invitation to use the feature in YouTube’s creator studio. To offer multiple dubs on a video, creators will be able to add different audio tracks through the subtitles editor tool on YouTube and can update new and existing videos with additional audio tracks.
The multi-language feature was initially tested by a smaller group of creators that included YouTube star Jimmy Donaldson, best known as MrBeast. Though YouTube did not share the exact number of creators who will have access to the feature beginning Thursday, a spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter that “thousands more” creators are being included in the rollout, with further expansions expected in the future.

With his newest product, MrBeast is catering to consumers who enjoy Deez.
“Deez what?” you might ask.
Deez Nutz.
That’s the name of a nut bar that is now available through the Feastables shop. MrBeast (real name Jimmy Donaldson) founded his snack brand last year and has since expanded it several times. Donaldson’s invocation of a playground play on words is his attempt to market the first Feastables bar to include nuts.
Donaldson introduced Deez Nutz in a video he shared on Twitter. Though the bar made its debut two days after the Super Bowl, Donaldson chose not to run a Big Game ad for Feastables, because he didn’t want to fork over $7 million. He did make a brief appearance in the NFL’s Super Bowl commercial.

It’s been a busy week for Jimmy Donaldson. Over just a few days, the man known as MrBeast was named as YouTube’s Top Creator of 2022 and took home the Streamy Award for Creator of the Year. Those plaudits came on the heels of his new collaboration with toy company Nerf and his appearance on the cover of Forbes‘ annual 30 Under 30 issue.
The Forbes cover story calls out the remarkable wealth Donaldson has generated from his content and offline ventures. The piece suggests that the North Carolina native could become the first person to turn YouTube videos into a billion-dollar enterprise. Donaldson played it cool. “Your probability of being a billionaire is higher if you don’t make that your goal,” he told Forbes. “Just focus on making a company that is dope.”
