What struck me most about this film was the naturalism. When bad actors act, it is noticeably acting, but watching this, with mainly non-professional actors, was like watching ordinary people. I don't live in Greenock (thank ....) but near enough to know this is what it's like for some. An objective view for most people would find the main characters' milieu and actions reprehensible, but in the film it makes total sense. If you have few or no options, what can you do? The best for your family, by your own lights.
