Review of Pulse

Pulse (2001)

It wasn't what I expected...

I added this to my netflix flist hoping to see a genuinely scary Japanese horror film. It'd been a while since I'd been properly frightened by a film so when I saw the rave reviews, I decided to check it out.

Honestly I can't say this film should be categorized as horror. It wasn't remotely frightening to me in the least and if anything, "Pulse" was depressing and long (one of my friends actually fell asleep several times during the movie and she's one of those easy to scare types). I also feel like they could have cut out a lot of the little scenes where the characters were just existing in whatever morose or pensive state they were in.

The camera angles in the first thirty minutes or so of the movie kinda bugged me as well. I felt like I was watching some amateur camera action of people sitting around chatting. There were no proper close ups... honestly to the point where I didn't really know what the characters looked like until they started dying off. ...or perhaps the camera angles were supposed to be metaphorical and I just didn't get it.

Ultimately, "Pulse" IMO is more or less an apocalyptic, depressing documentary of human loneliness that just wasn't my cup of tea. Not a bad movie necessarily but not certainly not the "best damn horror movie" of all time.
