Gulaal - Worth Watching
18 March 2009
Gulaal, a movie about personal ambition, student politics, blind love, infatuation, betrayal, and pride. Some say it's a movie about regionalism. No way. It's just another topic to show the above mentioned human characteristics.

Anurag Kashyap has done a good job in this movie. This is a good story and a nice screenplay. The director has presented well certain aspects of student politics and he has done a fair job in convincing the audience about the regionalism presented in the movie. He also used the cast well, especially Mahie Gill (Madhuri), Abhimanyu Singh (Ransa), Aditya Srivastava (Karan) and Piyush Mishra (Prithvi Bana). I have never noticed Piyush Mishra before as an actor and he does a good job in this movie, at least he is noticeable. Mahie Gill is a fine actress and I was very much impressed with her in her debut movie Dev D. In Gulaal she did not have a major role but she was very convincing. Abhimanyu and Aditya did justice to their roles and were equally impressive.

I will not say anything about the acting of Kay Kay Menon as he again performed this role with just elegance and convincing ease that one starts picturing him as Dukkee Bana only. Kay Kay's stellar presence not only gives this movie credibility among audience but also makes sure that it will do all justice to the expectations. Kudos to him again! However, I feel that Kay Kay needs to have more variety to his dialogue deliveries. His high pitch dialogues are becoming reminiscence of his earlier performances.

I can not be done with the acting department without writing anything about the Bhati of Gulaal. This is one actor who is just completely into the character. Bhati is beyond praise as you will never know whether he is beyond doing justice to his character or being the character itself. Although Bhati did not get any big scenes in the movie except the climactic scene of Dukkee Bana being shot by Dilip, but he is just so obvious and spontaneous that you will ever differentiate him with the character. I was lucky to watch him in Omkara. Salute Deepak Dobriyal!

I saw Jesse Randhawa on the big screen for the first time. Let me tell something very clearly here, I always loved her since I was a kid and I was just awed to see her on the big screen and I would love to see her again. She still has to prove her acting abilities but she looked comfortable (and sexy) in the saree.

Ayesha Mohan! Another important character of the movie, tried hard to impress the audience but in my opinion she just fell short to impress me. She has good dialogue delivery, convincing acting abilities and the looks of Kiran of the movie but she still has a lot to prove about her. But overall, the acting department did a GOOD job in the movie. The supporting artists like the "Ardhanari" character, Dukkee Bana's wife, Jadwal were all good.

The music of Gulaal was not contemporary. During this age of 'Topi Walas' you have to come up with 'catching' tunes. But I think the music director of Gulaal was focusing on just the music FOR the movie and he did a brilliant job in "Ranaji Mhare", "Duniya O Ri Duniya" and "Arambha hai Prachand". And "Sarfaroshi ki tamanna" is a phenomenon.

Let's now come to the drawbacks of the movie. Firstly the language in the movie is not actually of the language of the place portrayed in the movie. But I understand that the director's choice of making the movie in 'popular Hindi' caters to a bigger audience. And I appreciate that. Secondly, some of the actors did not do true justice to the character. I won't take any names here but it will be easy for you to figure them out. Thirdly the movie doesn't have any 'catchy' songs. Also, the director has is reservations in portraying certain aspects of the student politics.

There is a lot more to talk about this movie. The Dilip's character, his love/infatuation (you decide) and the tried but failed character of Kiran. All in all it's a good movie to watch. My rating would be… 7.0 / 10.0 Stars
