Review of Iruvar

Iruvar (1997)
10/10
Iruvar belongs to more than those two.

I have seen this movie several times and I know I will watch it several times more. For a person like me (who knows the political history of TN) it is a wonderful experience to just watch he movie. The two main characters Anandan and Tamilselvan portrayed by two of India's finest actors Mohanlal and Prakash Raj (both have won multiple national awards) have not acted well as the two characters but have lived those. Their performance is truly remarkable so have all the other supporting cast, I've always been a critic of Aishwarya rai's acting but I need to admit she has done her role well considering this is her debut movie. Gouthami, Nassar, Revathi and Tabu have done their role exceptionally well even though none of them have a major part in terms of on-screen time. A.R. Rahman's music is perfect and awesome, along with some classical tunes, he has also composed some jazz type song which blend in with the movie. The song '" naan oruvan" remind of the tunes composed for MGR. Vairamuthu's lyrics and not to forget Santosh Sivan's unparalleled cinematography takes the movie to new height. I would also mention that ARR's background music plays as a character in the script. Subtle emotions of the actors blend well with the music and cinematography which in several places talks for itself even in the absence of dialogues. The captain of this ship Mani Ratnam has made sure that this is a movie is one that would go down in the history as his best works and it indeed is. He has shown meticulous attention to include all possible insinuations but at the same time he has refrained from showing the facts. A script well written with aptly written dialogues make it the best Tamil movie ever (overall in all departments and one must remember that this movie does not have leading actors of Tamil cinema such as Rajinikanth or Kamal Hasan). Several scenes in the movie are remarkable, one would be the one in which Mohanlal raises his hand to waive to the crowds, another is a roof top scene in which Prakash Raj and Mohanlal. This movie is a treat for all and is my all time favourite that I would recommend to anyone.
