Review of Force

Force (2011)
5/10
Not forceful enough
24 December 2011
Within the first 10 minutes of Force, an inconsequential thug wraps tries to emulate a legendary action scene from Shiva, by wrapping a bicycle chain around his fist. And just to show how times have changed John effortlessly throws a bike at this guy for a quick kayo! And if there is anything in Force, thats what it is- brawn.

As far as the movie goes, it a remake of southern hit Kaaka Kaaka...clichéd action stuff- an ultra violent crime fighting unit targeted by a sadistic villain. And on the sidelines there is a love story between two improbable people that you wouldn't give two hoots for. Technically brilliant, with very good cinematography, but absolutely soul-less. Yet i remember thoroughly enjoying Kaaka Kaaka with my friends down South because of Suriya, and John maybe double his size, but has a quarter of his acting chops. For John though, its a moment of personal glory. Just like Rockstar was made for Ranbir, this one which makes do with a solo expression and with more bullets than words, was made for John. Savour this folks, this is the best John can do. Years later, when his grandchildren ask him what was his best movie, Force will be top of his list.

Its hard to believe Genelia is the same girl who wowed hearts in Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na...here with her accent, overkajalled eyes, and IQ of a baby, she does a fantastic job of getting on the nerves. On the flip side, she was nattily dressed all the time- clap clap.

If there is anything good in the movie, it has to be Vidyut Jamwal, the antihero débutante who somehow showed that he always belonged here on the big stage. His lithe, athletic frame and intense eyes a perfect foil to John's buff-ness and deadpan looks, and his action sequences that used kallaripayattu, kungfu and gymnastics were out of the world awesome. He is STAR material with super screen presence, expect good things from him soon.

Force, Dumb Maro Dumb makes me wonder that as time flies, we keep getting further and further from the gold standard in cop dramas of recent times- Sarfarosh!
