Perhaps the "Mickey Rooney" of the 21st Century . . .
25 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
. . . at 5-feet, 2-inches tall, Kevin Hart certainly has the form to go with a style more than reminiscent of Rooney. While it is true that early Hart vehicles such as SCARY MOVIE may not be in the same league with Rooney's boyhood work--including NATIONIAL VELVET and the Andy Hardy series--movies in general are pretty much apples and oranges when compared to Hollywood's output of the 1940s under the Golden Age of the Studio System. Ironically enough, LET ME EXPLAIN shows what an ordeal it is when the performers such as Hart must manage their own retinue and parties, rather than having studio flacks to do the heavy lifting for them. Many instances of backstage and behind-the-scenes chaos are captured by LET ME EXPLAIN directors Leslie Small and Tim Story, due to Hart's lack of the level of support Rooney enjoyed in his heyday under the studio system. It is a wonder that Kevin can think up any jokes at all, let alone come up with "crowning achievements" such as becoming the first stand-up comedian to go on tour with fire-on-the-stage, just like pop stars such as Madonna or ABBA!
