Kaththi - Ten Times Thuppaki Indeed(Spoiler Free)
23 October 2014
Kaththi is in short, the story of how a blunt, desperate fight for rights turns into a sharp Kaththi(Knife) with a new, much smarter, much more aggressive leader to lead it.

First Half: ARM follows his usual time line for the movie, with about 30-40 minutes comprising of commercial content such as songs, romance, comedy, but he did show some uniqueness with the opening scene being riveting and the title card was unique too. Then,a few twists to get the adrenaline pumping, but followed by commercial content, (perhaps to allow the audience to relax after all the excitement first up?) and then, the issue of the movie, placed well, timed well too. The pre-interval fight scene laid the platform for what was to come in the second half of the movie.

Second Half: Second half starts of with the raging Selfie Pulla to put the fans into celebratory mode, which i felt was placed very well, thus allowing the rest of the movie to flow without any such commercial elements. The coin fight will be talked about for a long time, for the creativity and genuineness and could very well be the best fight sequence this year. Then, another typical twist, true to A.R.M's movie mantra, leading up to a brutally honest monologue in the press meet, which is being appreciated by all reviewers for the amount of truth, and for the way in which it was rendered by Vijay. The climax, has a twist, similar to Thuppaki, and satisfies all those action-hungry movie buffs who want to see a movie end only with a fight scene.

Vijay has shown that you don't have to change the way you look to show difference between two characters, even in a dual role movie. Samantha has done her job well as a leading lady, despite not having much to do besides romance the hero and ooze glamor in songs. It is however worth noting that she was allowed to be part of most of the scenes, despite not having any dialogues like the hero, which is rare in Tamil movies, especially in commercial movies. Satish the comedian has done his job, giving life to the first half before the actual plot of the movie is revealed. In another rare occurrence, he has been given a significant role during the fight scene too. A.R.M has done a lot of homework for the film, and made sure that there are only very few (permissible by commercial movie standards)loopholes in the script. Anirudh's BGM calls for special appreciation as he made his debut in the league of the biggies with aplomb, since his music made the audience give the desired reaction to each and every single incident, scene, and dialogue. Different BGM's for the Villain and the hero, a smart move. Neil Nitin Mukesh fits perfectly into the bill of a corporate boss with no mercy, and his dialogue " Everybody out there has a price" best describes him.

A.R.Murugadoss and Vijay have proved yet again what a powerful combo these two can be. Surely a blockbuster with review sites pouring in appreciations for packaging a serious issue in a typical commercial entertainer with such ease and precision. A.R.M has taken an ordinary story and, with Vijay's acting and mass appeal, turned it into a phenomenal movie.
