This film is a perfect representation of the miscommunication that happens between people at any age, but more poignantly, during a couples senior years. Here we have a comfortable couple who maybe don't do exciting things anymore but happily get on with their lives twiddling about doing senior things. A letter arrives. It is a bit of a bombshell - news arriving 50 years after a very dramatic event. Geoff (Courtney) has quite a bit of emotional processing to do but the film makes it clear that he is respectful of his wife's displeasure of the remembrances this brings about. He keeps his thoughts to himself. Meanwhile, Kate (Rampling) is imagining all kinds of personal slights. Imagining being the operative word! You see both characters deep in thought but only one point of view is expressed. Yes, folks, that's the misdirect because poor Geoff is a generous, giving, honest and jolly good chap. Kate very nearly destroys it all.
