Uptown (1987)
5/10
In Pursuit of MacGuffin.
5 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Victoria Avril, as Veronica, learns that her masseuse was murdered but the murderer has left a clue for her to follow. She follows it. To the tune of some plunky music, some amusing moments, and occasional tension. The mystery is wrapped up at the end, and it was really complicated.

Victoria Avril is a surprising actress, attractive in a goofy way, with a fine figure and the most expressive eyes. Here, for the most part, she pouts and acts nervous, and with good reason.

I don't know what the director, Pedro Almodovar, has against Avril but here and in their better-known production, "Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down," the poor girl is constantly getting slapped, punched in the stomach, bound and gagged, and coshed on the head with a blackjack.

The MacGuffin is some stolen gold that is melted down into bars and smuggled aboard a yacht in order to -- to -- well, I don't know. If you figure it out, please send me an email. In return I will send you a personal check for fifteen cents which, if I were the recipient, I wouldn't try cashing until about next January.
