Top of the Lake (2013–2017)
6/10
Brilliant in its weirdness, but therefor also flawed

Some movies or series fail because of stupid characters, awful dialogues and lack of development. This one doesn't.

Top of the Lake begins as a regular police/drama with a pleasant atmosphere which radiates realistic mystery. Quickly you'll notice there are a few normal people, many weird people and some very weird people. Sometimes this means bad writing, but this is not the case.

As unhinged as the people seem to be, there is an obvious underlying message. Which is the eternal battle between youth and elderly, and the ones who fall in-between, who have to make to most difficult choices which are almost always about letting people go, and keeping others safe.

But even besides that message, the writers succeed in keeping things consistent. The weird choices seem fit for the weird people. Their actions, which would never be yours, are the right actions for the people in this series and after more episodes, everything will feel connected in the right way.

The secret of watching this series is realizing that this doesn't have to be your place, your country or even your world. Let go of your logic and follow the logic of the characters who all have reasons for their choices. This will help to accept the (plot) holes which are plenty.

When all characters are settled, the main story will continue and unfold as any other story would. A crime is committed and who did it? But at that time, the people and village have earned their right to continue existing which will make you forgive the craziness and ask for a second season, just as Fargo did.
