Mediocre, but with a Great Surprise
2 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
For the most part, this is a thoroughly mediocre political thriller that could have been a lot better. It's focused on the themes of Ruby Ridge and right-wing militia-style terrorism, which is interesting. It also has elements similar to The Americans: are there sleeper agents living next door? But unfortunately it falls into bad thriller cliches, with forced tension, people startling our hero from behind as he uncovers essential clues, and Jeff Bridges' character just constantly panicking and running around like an insane person.

However. Despite all these and more flaws, Arlington Road in large part redeems itself with one of the ballsiest endings I've seen in a while. I almost didn't t even mention the strength of the ending, because it's so much better coming out of nowhere, but I can't think of another way to convince you to stick with the film to the end and give it a try. I think you'll be pleased.
