Great performance in an average movie

Warning: Spoilers
"The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" is an overrated and overlong Hollywood classic given real juice by its star performance.

Bogart is Fred C. Dobbs, a flea-bitten American scavenger in Mexico, who gets the idea of digging for gold in the mountains. Right from the beginning, we see where it's heading: a morality tale about the destructive power of greed. But Bogart, with his generally impassive face but wild, shining eyes, starts going crazy with paranoia, and his descent into madness is captivating.

Too bad the movie keeps getting in his way. A subplot about bandits, who utter the famous misquote about "steenkin' badges", just feels like a distraction, and the movie goes on far too long.
