I feel some people have been watching too many action movies. Yes, this is slow. Sure, it's no American Graffiti. Yet there are some sweet scenes. Most everyone likely can relate to the characters in this film from time when they finished high school.
Watch carefully in the train scene. I learned many years ago that a good actor uses his/her eyes and facial expressions without saying a thing to create a good scene. That and Ryan Miller's "Peep That" track, and the swaying of the train, pull it all together.
There are movies that are even slower than this and they are getting good reviews.
