Review of Charlie

Charlie (2004)
4/10
Goss crime-boss dross.

Note to aspiring UK film-makers: if you must resort to the tired Brit gangster genre, digging up a real-life London thug for your subject matter, please make sure there's an interesting story to be told. And don't insult your audience by trying to paint your subject as anything other than a despicable criminal lowlife. Thank you.

In Charlie, Luke Goss plays Charles "Charlie" William Richardson, leader of the South London 'Torture Gang', known for their sadistic treatment of transgressors. The film sees Charlie and his fellow reprobates in court for their crimes, and tells of their nefarious exploits in a series of bland flashbacks in which Goss effs and blinds for all his worth (I don't mind a bit of swearing, but this is ridiculous).

Try as he might, director Malcolm Needs fails to inject any life into proceedings: the film's script is all over the place and there are far too many characters to keep track of (and none to care about). The result is a forgettable film about a long forgotten miscreant.
