Review of Cindy La Regia

10/10
Surprisingly Funny
12 February 2020
I was very skeptical about watching this movie, after reading some bad reviews from local "critics". However, I read and heard from many people that they found this movie funny, so I decided to give it a try.

Cindy La Regia is based on the Mexican upper-class character from the social networks created by Ricardo Cucamonga back in the early 2000's. He has also written some books on behalf of Cindy La Regia that are well-sold nationwide. The character's essence is totally depicted in the movie.

It is not a masterpiece or Oscar-worthy, so if you go and see this movie with that idea in mind, you might be disappointed, but if you go just to have a good time, you will definitely have it. Cassandra Sanchez-Navarro is great as Cindy La Regia in her big screen debut. Being a Regio myself, I found Cassandra very convincing in her role (she's actually not Regia in real life): her acting and specially her accent is very Regio. Even Cucamonga, Cindy's creator, mentioned that he always imagined real-life Cindy La Regia as depicted in the film. "When I saw the movie, it was as if Cindy has gotten out from the comics." (Magazine Class MX, 2020).

The supporting characters are great too. Cindy's parents and her Regio friends are also depicted as in the comics/books. The new characters deliver as well. If you are Regio (or from Monterrey, Mexico), you will probably enjoy more this film, as there are some references to the culture of this city. People from province that move to the capital, might felt identified as well.

You will probably enjoy the movie if you have read the comics (or books) and found them funny, or perhaps if you don't know anything about the character. However, if you don't like Cindy La Regia previous published material you won't like this movie either.
