Jean and Harry: A Love Story
22 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
In "I'm Your Woman," the central relationship is that of Jean and her baby Harry, who are in a criminal-style witness protection program. The singular accomplishment of the filmmakers was to elicit natural reactions from the kid with an inordinate amount of screen time.

Certainly the relationship of Jean and Harry is unorthodox. Jean could not produce a baby herself. So, her husband Eddie, a criminal magnate and killer in the underworld, finds a way to "adopt" an unwanted baby. But as soon as Jen is settling in with her new baby, she is hustled out of the house, given $200,000, and forced to live on the run because her husband had murdered an overlord name Marvin.

The slow-paced film received a boost in the scenes between Cal and Jen. Cal was called in by Eddie to protect her. Obviously a caring father himself, Cal was attentive to baby Harry and skillfully moved Jen around to various "safe" houses, including his own family cabin. An interesting chemistry developed between CAl and Jean. Cal's wife Teri, as well as the wise grandfather Art, provided able and kind assistance as well.

The screenplay became overly complicated with the machinations of the crime world of which the audience learns only a smattering of details. The crucial character of Eddie drops out of the film early. And the past relationship of Eddie and Terry, which never clearly came into focus, made the film especially convoluted.

It was really up to actress Rachel Brosnahan to try to infuse mundane scenes of child-rearing with interest and suspense. On the set, Rachel must have had the patience of Job. Ultimately, despite the hard-working efforts of the actress, the film was sluggish and overly unpleasant.
