The Great North (2021– )
8/10
Better than I thought

Warning: Spoilers
I remember thinking this show looked lame when the first pictures and promos were revealed. Plus, it doesn't help that it has the generic modern adult cartoon art style (Bob's Burgers / Rick and Morty or a variation of it). But my philosophy is that good writing and characters can make up for mediocre visuals.

When I actually sat down and watched it, I didn't care that the animation looks like Bob's Burgers. I was hooked on the characters. Each have their own established personalities, struggles and motivations. Plus, the Alaska setting provides many plot opportunities and a unique perspective. Not a lot of shows take place in Alaska. But this one does.

I don't like the character art that much but it's passable. But the backgrounds are absolutely stunning. When you want to portray a state as beautiful as Alaska, you have to go all out. Especially with the Aurora Borealis in episode 1. A work of art through and through.

The show, at its core is about rebuilding family and finding happiness. Judy's mother abandoned her and pretended to die so that her husband Beef would be fooled. And for the longest time, he was, but his kids knew the truth all along. This is a very hard-hitting, emotional plot line.

Give it a chance, you'll like it a lot. I unironically think this is the best show on Animation Domination.
