Thoughtful, truthful, terrific movie
18 September 2021
This is clearly a low budget film, but the story is so clear and horrifying that I was absorbed for every minute of the movie. The camera work defies description: it shows the awful conditions at Auschwitz/Birkenau, and as someone who has been to both camps, this is clearly Birkenau, where more Jews were slaughtered. The two escapees endured terrible conditions to dig their tunnel out, and their compatriots in Hut 9 endured terrible reprisals for their cover up of the escape.

When they did get back to Slovakia, the Red Cross had trouble believing them, as they were already delivering food parcels to the 'refugees' at Auschwitz and believed the Nazi propaganda. The sacrifices made by these people and others helped open the eyes of the Allies to what was really going on.

Because this was sub titled and partly in English, it is hard to judge the performances, but I was impressed throughout with this movie, especially the camera work which was truly outstanding, both in and outside the camp.
