Dracula (1931)
7/10
Uneven but still very enjoyable

For a movie for which it could seriously be argued kick-started the horror film genre, Dracula is definitely a movie which is underplayed. The first half, in which Jonathan Harker travels to Transylvania to meet the infamous Count, is great. There's loads of atmosphere and elaborate gothic imagery, with Bela Lugosi never better as the nefarious title character. But once events relocate to London, there is no doubt that things do take a turn to the stagey, with too much horror implied rather than shown. Nevertheless, despite all that, this one still retains the benefit of being made in its era, where expressionistic lighting was the order of the day and the primitive sound quality almost has a dreamlike vibe to today's ears too. So, while this is wildly uneven, its worth seeing. I would also recommend watching it with the modern reinterpreted soundtrack by the Kronos Quartet.
