Thirst (2009)
7/10
An interesting vampire movie

Short review would be that this is like the Twilight saga story except five times shorter and at least five times as good.

Longer review would have to start with admitting that ultimately, it's not that simple. This is very different from Twilight, in terms of its content, setting, tone etc. But the main plot revolves around two lonely/somewhat repressed people falling in love, and one of them is a vampire. There's family drama, and you could sort of argue there's a love triangle of sorts in Thirst, too (though that's probably a stretch).

Park Chan-wook's new movie, Decision To Leave, is getting a lot of positive buzz, so thought it was worth checking some of his other movies out in the meantime, as I don't know when/if my local cinema will screen his newest one.

Thirst isn't quite as good as Oldboy or The Handmaiden in my opinion, but it's got a lot going for it. It's beautifully shot and the two lead performances are great. There are interesting ideas, and it puts a particularly confronting and daring spin on familiar vampire themes.

Still, I feel like it unravelled a bit as it went on, becoming less unpredictable and a little more repetitive. At least the final scene is pretty strong, and the movie overall is still fairly good.
