On June 17, 2015 a 21-year-old white supremacist shot and killed nine African Americans in the Emanuel African Method Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. This documentary not only focusses on the aftermath of that tragic incident, but also explores the history of Charleston and the way the community came together in a time of great need.
Director Brian Ivie astutely captures a strong and heart-wrenching feeling of terrible loss -- the eyewitness accounts are both moving and harrowing in equal measure -- as well as offers a moving and inspiring portrait of the triumph of the human spirit in the face of adversity, with love, kindness, and forgiveness winning over hatred, intolerance, and violence thanks to the firm and unshakeable faith of the good people of Charleston. A very poignant and powerful film.
