trying to be darker Ferris
29 July 2022
Brett Blackmore (Eli Brown) has spent his four years of high school studying under the directions of his parents (Jerry O'Connell, Natalie Zea). To his parents' delight, he is the school valedictorian but his friends decry his lack of fun. He has a crush on schoolmate Kayla Pierce (Madison Iseman) but has done little about it. He reluctantly agrees to join the senior prank day but ends up being blamed for burning down a school building. In a fit of frustration, he gives out a F it list on the internet which goes viral.

This starts off with a Booksmart-like premise although Brett is closer to a frat boy than a nerd. He has so many friends. It's one of several false notes that the movie strikes. I don't really care whether some white privileged frat boy loses his Ivy League ride. Then there are his parents. Jerry O'Connell can sometimes go over the top with his broad comedy. He's probably not the right fit with this premise especially if it goes to some darker places. I do like the attempt at some serious themes. The movie obviously sees itself as a darker offspring of Ferris Bueller. When Kayla does her shocking reveal, it opens up an interesting path. I like this idea but even that comes with an annoying PR guy. The frustration with the education system has some merits but all he does with his freedom is bum around the world and have sex with the beautiful girl. Privileged white frat boy strikes again although that's what I would do if I got the opportunity. So I can't blame him. My overall take is that this is a deeply flaw attempt but it does try to dig into some interesting ideas.
