Super Fun

Warning: Spoilers
It's a conceit to have dogs that can talk in a universe where superheroes exist, YET they can't understand them. Surely one superhero has the ability to speak to animals. Oh wait, I guess Aquaman can speak to fish. That said, this is a buoyant fun flick that is adorable enough to melt the coldest of adult hearts. The story is of Krypto, Superman's dog who we first see ret-conned into stowing a ride with Supes when he was a baby being given up by The El's (Jor-El). They grow up in Metropolis together. Krypto (voiced by Dwayne Johnson) is proud to be Superman's best friend. And does what a typical dog does...love to take walks. While Superman has settled into a domesticated life, Krypto knows and feels it is his duty to protect Kal-El at all costs. Then...a woman gets in a way. You guessed it, Lois Lane. The plucky news reporter is portrayed here as a fearless newscaster putting herself in harms way to get a story. The focus isn't on her though, it's that she is the catalyst for Krypto to finally feel a twinge of jealousy. Or the feeling that he will soon be abandoned. It doesn't help that a bulldog looking mutt at a animal shelter puts a bug in his ear that that is what people do. They abandon pets. In that shelter there is a hairless guinea pig that fawns for a past life. That which is tied into a human villain which we all know is Superman's nemesis. It's a great idea to have each person, EVEN a villain have pets. Except some treat them better than others.

The fun begins when the League of Superheroes are captured or knocked out of the picture, and it is up to this ragtag bunch of a pig, a squirrel, a turtle and the bulldog to help Krypto save Earth.

I was charmed by the colors of the project. Metropolis is seen as warm and a pleasant place to be. Though there is crime, much has been thwarted by the human superheroes. Here, the message seems to be that even abandoned animals will have their purpose and should not be underestimated. Pets seem to have unconditional love for people. Moreso that we provide their existence. Until we don't. Love of an animal transcends anything we can describe and I found myself missing a dog I once had. They are loyal to an extent. But more importantly, they remain while others disappear. There is a deeper message with the love of pets. It reaches to every lover of pets and should warm your heart.

Plenty of laughs for adults. Great loud noises for children. Incidentally, the theater I saw the movie in had plenty of kids. They remained quiet as the movie played. I would say that is the sign of a very effective flick.

Well done.
