Longitude (2000)

Surprisingly interesting!

Warning: Spoilers
I wasn't sure that this subject was going to grab my attention or keep me awake, but the acting and pace of this mini-series hit the mark. A perhaps 'dry' subject, the science behind discovering the measurement of longitude, might put most people off, and understandably so. However, here you have acting, writing and enough historical facts that are presented in a most entertaining yet engrossing way. The simultaneous storylines for both parallel time frames actually work quite well, which was another surprise. It's normally a bit more confusing or just plain annoying. Michael Gambon and Jeremy Irons are top-notch in their portrayals, but all other roles are well-represented by many well-known and excellent actors and actresses. The costumes, scenery and period details were spot-on, and the pace is just right to hold your attention. A little-known gem that deserves a greater audience and a discovery that still has a lasting relevance to today. Thumbs up.
